THE EMPIRE BENEATH THE ASHES Chapter One: The Men in the Sky

The helicopters came low over Blackthorn Manor.

Their searchlights swept across the long driveway, slicing through the darkness and flooding the grand windows with white light.

Nathan stared toward the ceiling.

“What did you do?”

For the first time since I had known him, his voice contained no arrogance.

Only fear.

Celeste rose from the leather chair so quickly that her champagne flute slipped from her hand. It struck the stone floor and shattered.

Neither of them looked at the glass.

The sound of engines multiplied outside.

Black SUVs tore through the iron gates. Security vehicles followed. Men in dark tactical uniforms poured onto the grounds with the disciplined speed of soldiers.

Nathan grabbed my phone.

He looked at the screen.

The call had already ended.

“Who is your father?” he demanded.

I remained on my knees.

The pain made every breath difficult, but I refused to let him see me collapse.

“You’ve met him,” I said.

Nathan froze.

I watched his mind search through four years of carefully manufactured memories.

My father had attended our wedding wearing an ordinary gray suit. He had introduced himself as Daniel Vale, a retired accountant who preferred fishing to business.

Nathan had barely spoken to him.

He had been more interested in wealthy donors and board members.

“You said he ran a small accounting firm.”

“He did.”

Nathan laughed nervously.

“That doesn’t explain helicopters.”

“No,” I said. “It doesn’t.”

The main doors shook beneath a heavy impact.

Nathan reached toward the drawer beneath the console table.

He kept a handgun there.

Before his fingers touched the handle, every light in Blackthorn Manor went out.

Darkness swallowed the hall.

Celeste screamed.

A moment later, red emergency lights flickered on.

The front doors burst inward.

Armed security officers entered first. Behind them came federal agents wearing jackets marked with bold yellow letters.

Nathan stopped moving.

Celeste backed into the armchair.

Then my father walked through the ruined doorway.

He was sixty-two, broad-shouldered, silver-haired and calm.

He wore a dark overcoat over a plain black suit.

No dramatic expression.

No raised voice.

He simply looked across the hall and saw me.

Something changed in his face.

Not surprise.

Not panic.

A coldness deeper than anger.

Two officers rushed toward me with a medic. My father lifted one hand, silently ordering everyone else to stay back.

He crossed the room alone.

Nathan tried to speak.

“Mr. Vale, this is a misunderstanding.”

Dad did not even look at him.

He removed his coat and placed it carefully around my shoulders.

“I’m here,” he said.

Those two words almost broke the control I had fought to maintain.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Your daughter attacked my consultant. She’s unstable. She’s been creating problems for months.”

Dad finally turned.

“I know exactly what my daughter has been doing for months.”

Nathan’s mouth closed.

Dad looked toward the pendant around my neck.

“Did it capture everything?”

“Yes.”

“Backups?”

“Three.”

“Good.”

Celeste made a sudden movement toward the side corridor.

An agent blocked her path.

“Celeste Monroe,” he said, “you are being detained in connection with financial fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.”

Her eyes widened.

Nathan looked from the agents to my father.

“You can’t come into my house without a warrant.”

A federal investigator entered holding a folder.

“Blackthorn Manor is currently subject to a seizure order,” she said. “Technically, Mr. Ashford, this may not be your house much longer.”

Nathan’s face went white.

My father helped me onto a stretcher.

As the medics began carrying me toward the door, Nathan shouted after me.

“You planned this!”

I turned my head.

“No,” I said. “You planned it.”

May you like

Then they carried me out beneath the searchlights.

Behind us, agents began tearing apart the empire Nathan believed would last forever.
