Chapter 6: The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

Dr. Stephen Cole ran a private neurology clinic in Cambridge.

He had attended our wedding.

He had toasted my marriage and told me I was lucky to have Celeste.

Now his signature appeared beneath a false diagnosis designed to erase my mother’s voice.

Rebecca arranged for an independent medical evaluation.

Three specialists examined Mom.

All reached the same conclusion.

She had mild speech difficulty and limited mobility caused by her stroke, but she showed no signs of dementia.

Her memory was clear.

Her judgment was sound.

She understood the trust, her property, and the accusations against Celeste and Daniel.

Dr. Cole’s affidavit began to collapse.

Then we found the appointment records.

He had billed my mother’s insurance for twelve neurological consultations.

None had occurred.

Security footage showed he had entered our home twice.

Both times, he went directly to Celeste’s office.

He never entered my mother’s room.

During one visit, the hidden camera captured him placing prescription bottles on Celeste’s desk.

“What are these?” Celeste asked.

“Enough to make Evelyn confused and sleepy,” he replied.

“Are they dangerous?”

“Not if you control the dose.”

“And if I don’t?”

Dr. Cole looked at her.

“Then she could stop breathing.”

The room fell silent around me as we watched.

Rebecca immediately contacted the hospital toxicology team.

Blood samples had already been collected from my mother.

Further testing revealed sedatives that had never been prescribed to her.

Celeste had not merely withheld medication.

She had secretly given Mom drugs to make her appear mentally incompetent.

Police arrested Dr. Cole that evening.

He was taken from his clinic in front of patients and staff.

At first, he denied everything.

Then investigators showed him the recording.

His attorney requested a private meeting.

Two hours later, Dr. Cole offered to cooperate.

He admitted providing the sedatives.

He admitted creating the false medical affidavit.

He admitted billing for appointments that never happened.

But he claimed Daniel had threatened him.

According to Stephen, Daniel knew he had falsified insurance claims at his clinic years earlier.

Daniel had promised to keep the fraud hidden if Stephen helped declare Evelyn incompetent.

“Did Celeste know?” Rebecca asked during the interview.

Stephen looked down.

“She knew everything.”

“Did she know the medication could kill Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

The answer should have shocked me.

It did not.

Nothing about Celeste shocked me anymore.

“What was supposed to happen the night Rosa was offered money to leave?” I asked.

Stephen’s face turned pale.

His attorney whispered to him.

Stephen shook his head.

“I wasn’t part of that.”

“But you know what they planned.”

“I heard Celeste and Daniel arguing.”

“About what?”

“Daniel wanted it to look natural.”

My hands curled into fists.

“What did they intend to do?”

May you like

Stephen looked directly at me.

“They were going to give Evelyn an overdose.”
