CHAPTER 2 — THE CAMERA NEVER LIED

The sirens stopped outside the Whitmore Hotel.
Two police officers and a team of paramedics rushed through the ballroom doors.
While the paramedics carefully lifted Sophie onto a stretcher, one officer examined the bloodstained menu board lying on the marble floor.
"Who struck the child?" he asked.
No one answered.
Then Preston stepped forward confidently.
"She stole my phone. I acted in self-defense."
The officer looked down at Sophie.
An unconscious eight-year-old girl.
Holding a slice of wedding cake in one hand.
The statement made no sense.
Before anyone could speak again, the hotel's general manager hurried into the ballroom.
"I'm afraid no one is leaving just yet."
He held a security tablet in his hands.
"Our security supervisor informed me that this entire area is covered by four synchronized cameras."
For the first time that evening, Preston's face changed.
He looked toward the ceiling.
Above the ballroom entrance...
The tiny red recording light was still blinking.
"I'd like to review the footage," the officer said.
Minutes later, everyone gathered inside the hotel's conference room.
The video began playing.
The first angle showed Sophie sitting beside Evelyn the entire evening.
She never approached the bridal table.
Never touched Preston's phone.
The second camera showed Preston pretending to answer a call before quietly slipping his own phone into his jacket pocket.
Then he walked casually toward Sophie's chair.
He glanced around.
No one was watching.
Except the cameras.
He lifted the little denim jacket.
Slid the phone into the pocket.
Smoothed the fabric.
Then calmly returned to the head table.
The room fell silent.
Several guests gasped.
Madison covered her mouth.
Carolyn's hands began to shake.
Richard removed his glasses and stared at the screen without speaking.
But the footage wasn't finished.
Another angle showed Evelyn shielding Sophie after the accusation.
Then Preston grabbed the heavy oak menu board.
He swung it with both hands.
The impact knocked the little girl to the floor.
It had never been self-defense.
It was assault.
The officer paused the recording.
Then looked directly at Preston.
May you like
"Turn around."
The groom's wedding reception ended in handcuffs.
