Chapter 2 – The Other Half of the Photograph

The ballroom had never been so quiet.

Ava stood beneath the chandeliers with wine dripping from her chin and the old gold locket resting open in Evelyn Whitman's trembling hands.

Inside the locket was half of a faded photograph.

A little girl in a yellow dress.

A red ribbon tied in her hair.

Evelyn stared at it as if the world had disappeared around her.

"No..." she whispered. "It can't be."

Hannah stepped closer, her white wedding gown brushing against the marble floor.

"Mom?"

Evelyn reached into the small pearl handbag beside her chair.

Her fingers shook as she pulled out a worn velvet pouch.

From inside, she removed another piece of paper.

The ballroom watched in stunned silence as she unfolded it.

It was the missing half of the photograph.

Another little girl stood beside the first child, also wearing yellow, also smiling beneath the summer sun.

Hannah gasped.

"That's me."

Evelyn carefully brought the two halves together.

The torn edges matched perfectly.

The photograph became whole again.

Two sisters.

Hannah and Ava.

Ava's lips parted, but no sound came out.

For twenty-three years, she had believed the locket was only proof that someone had once cared enough to leave her with something beautiful.

Now it was proof of something much larger.

She had not been abandoned.

She had been lost.

Evelyn lifted one trembling hand toward Ava's face.

"My daughter's name was Lily," she whispered. "Lily Whitman."

Ava stepped back slightly, overwhelmed.

"My name is Ava Ross."

"That was the name the orphanage gave you," Evelyn said, tears breaking through her voice. "But you were born Lily Grace Whitman."

Hannah covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.

"I had a sister."

"You have a sister," Evelyn corrected softly.

Across the room, Patricia Hartwell stood frozen.

Moments earlier, she had looked powerful.

Now she looked trapped.

The groom, Caleb, finally moved.

"Mother," he said slowly, "you threw wine on my bride's sister."

Patricia's face hardened.

"Nobody knew who she was."

Ava looked at her.

"That didn't stop you from deciding I deserved it."

The words were quiet.

But they landed heavily.

Then Evelyn turned toward the wedding coordinator.

"Bring me the guest registry."

The coordinator blinked.

"Mrs. Whitman?"

"Now."

A few minutes later, the registry book was placed on the head table.

Evelyn flipped through the pages with desperate focus until she reached the staff records.

There it was.

Ava Ross. Temporary banquet server.

Under emergency contact, the agency had listed the name of the orphanage where Ava had grown up.

Evelyn's face changed the moment she saw it.

"St. Agnes Children's Home."

Ava nodded slowly.

"That's where I was raised."

Evelyn's grip tightened on the page.

"That is impossible."

Hannah looked at her mother.

"Why?"

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Because St. Agnes told us our daughter had never been there."

The room shifted again.

May you like

This was no longer only a reunion.

It was a cover-up.
