Chapter 1 - THE CRY BEHIND THE WALL

The child behind the wall stopped crying the moment Emma Torres touched the painting.

That silence frightened her more than a scream.

Only thirty feet away, a string quartet played beneath crystal chandeliers while New York's richest guests raised champagne to William Sterling and his new wife. Emma stood in the staff corridor with yellow cleaning gloves on her hands and her heart pounding against her ribs.

The baroque painting did not belong there. Its gold frame was too wide for the brick wall, and fresh scratches marked the floor beneath it.

Emma pushed.

The painting shifted an inch.

Cold air breathed through the gap.

Then a weak voice whispered, “Please.”

“Ethan?” Emma pressed her face near the opening. “Ethan, is that you?”

A tiny knock answered from inside.

She shoved harder. The painting swung outward on hidden hinges, revealing a narrow steel door. There was no handle, only a keypad and a camera lens.

Emma pulled out her phone.

Before she could call security, footsteps clicked behind her.

Isabella Sterling stood at the end of the corridor in an ivory satin gown. Her smile was smooth, but her eyes were not.

“What are you doing back here?”

Emma stepped in front of the hidden door. “I heard a child.”

“You heard the pipes.”

“I heard Ethan.”

Isabella walked closer. “Ethan is in Maine.”

The weak voice came again through the wall.

“Emma?”

Isabella's face changed.

Only for a second.

Then she reached into the folds of her gown and pressed a small remote.

The steel door made a heavy locking sound.

Emma stared at her. “Open it.”

“Go back to the ballroom.”

“Open the door now.”

Isabella's voice dropped. “You have worked for this family for eleven years. Do not throw your life away over a sound you misunderstood.”

Emma raised her phone. “Then you won't mind if I call Mr. Sterling.”

Isabella slapped the phone from her hand. It broke against the marble.

Music and laughter continued beyond the hallway doors.

No one heard.

Emma bent slowly, picked up the cracked phone, and saw one final notification on the screen.

A message had been sent from Ethan's tablet five minutes earlier.

It contained only four words.

SHE PUT ME HERE.

Emma looked up.

May you like

Isabella was no longer smiling.

And from behind the steel door came the sound of a child collapsing.
