CHAPTER 2 — The Boy Who Was Never Supposed to Return

The grand ballroom fell into complete silence.

Crystal chandeliers shimmered overhead, but no one noticed them anymore.

Every eye was fixed on the little boy clinging to Amelia Ashcroft.

His small body trembled violently.

His white shirt was soaked with blood near his shoulder.

He buried his face against her neck as though letting go would mean disappearing again.

"Mom..."

The single word shattered Amelia's world.

Her hands instinctively wrapped around him.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times.

In dreams.

In nightmares.

In empty rooms where she still whispered his name.

"Noah..." she breathed.

"It can't be..."

Five years earlier, the police had declared her six-year-old son dead after a boating accident during a family vacation.

His body was never recovered.

The investigation ended.

The case was closed.

Everyone told her to move on.

She never did.

Now the child everyone claimed was gone stood alive in her arms.

Across the ballroom, an elegant woman froze.

Vivian Hawthorne.

Chairwoman of the Hawthorne Foundation.

One of the night's most celebrated guests.

The color drained from her face.

She took one cautious step backward.

Noah saw her.

His terrified expression returned instantly.

"Don't let her take me!"

He screamed so loudly the orchestra stopped playing.

Amelia turned slowly toward Vivian.

"What did he say?"

Vivian forced a smile.

"I've never seen that child before."

Noah shook uncontrollably.

"She lied!"

"She locked me away!"

The room erupted with whispers.

Then Amelia noticed something tied around Noah's neck.

A tiny silver compass.

It had belonged to her late husband.

She had fastened it around Noah's neck the morning he disappeared.

No counterfeit could explain that.

No lie could erase it.

She looked directly into Vivian's eyes.

"You know exactly who my son is."
