Chapter 15 - THE JUDGE IN VICTOR’S POCKET

Judge Henry Vale ordered Victor transferred from federal custody to a private medical unit before noon.
The official reason was cardiac distress.
Ethan knew exactly what it was.
An escape route.
Federal prosecutors filed an emergency motion.
Vale denied it.
Then he sealed Victor’s case from public view.
The pattern was obvious.
Victor’s network was still functioning.
Amelia remembered Vale visiting Hawthorne Ridge twice.
“He never spoke to me directly.”
“He spoke with Reed.”
“What did they discuss?”
“I only heard pieces.”
“Something about making sure nobody could testify.”
Ethan contacted the Justice Department.
By afternoon, investigators were examining Vale’s finances.
They found unexplained payments.
Then they found something worse.
Vale had signed the emergency order allowing Amelia to be listed as an unidentified psychiatric patient seven years earlier.
He had legally buried her while she was still alive.
But before authorities could arrest him, Judge Vale disappeared.
His car was found near the East River.
Blood stained the driver’s seat.
No body.
Victor claimed ignorance.
Ethan did not believe him.
Neither did Amelia.
“He’s removing witnesses.”
Rose finally spoke more openly after several days.
Years of conditioning made every sentence difficult.
She slept with the lights on.
She hid food beneath her pillow.
Whenever someone raised their voice, she stopped speaking.
Ethan never forced her to call him Dad.
He simply stayed near.
One afternoon, Rose entered his study holding a folded piece of paper.
“I drew something.”
Ethan smiled.
“Can I see?”
She handed it to him.
It was not a child’s drawing.
It was a map.
A hallway.
Three rooms.
A staircase.
A symbol like a crown.
“What is this?”
“Victor’s other house.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“But Judge came there.”
Ethan studied the page.
“What Judge?”
“The old man from Mommy’s room.”
Henry Vale.
Rose pointed toward one room.
“They kept boxes there.”
“What boxes?”
“Black ones.”
“What was inside?”
She whispered.
“Videos.”
Ethan contacted Nora.
The description matched a Blackwood hunting lodge in the Catskills.
Investigators obtained a warrant.
Inside a hidden basement, they discovered Victor’s private archive.
Hundreds of drives.
Thousands of documents.
Blackmail material spanning thirty years.
And one handwritten ledger.
The first page contained Charles’s name.
The second contained Victor’s.
The last contained a name Ethan had never expected.
His own.
Next to it were the words:
PROJECT SUCCESSION.
