Chapter 3: Patterns Never Lie

Nathaniel didn't confront Vivien.

Not immediately.

Instead, he did what had made him one of the most respected businessmen in the country.

He investigated.

Without telling anyone, he requested every security recording from the estate.

The staircase itself had no camera.

His mother valued privacy too much.

But the hallway leading to it did.

So did the foyer below.

Hours of footage revealed one detail no one else had noticed.

At 7:11 p.m., Margaret climbed the stairs using her cane.

Vivien followed several steps behind.

At 7:12 p.m., both women disappeared into the blind spot.

Three seconds later...

Margaret screamed.

Four seconds after that...

Vivien calmly walked into camera view.

She looked down the staircase.

Then...

She deliberately took two deep breaths.

Only after composing herself did she begin screaming for help.

Nathaniel replayed the clip six times.

Most people panicked first.

Vivien had prepared first.

Still, suspicion wasn't proof.

Then the hospital called.

Margaret wanted to speak with him alone.

When Nathaniel entered her room, she handed him a sealed envelope.

"I didn't tell the police."

"Why not?"

"Because I wasn't sure anyone would believe an old woman."

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a new version of her will.

Every page had been signed just two days earlier.

"If anything happened to me before the wedding..."

Margaret looked directly into his eyes.

"...Vivien would receive nothing."

Nathaniel stared at her.

"You thought she might hurt you?"

"I thought she wanted certainty."

She paused.

"And greedy people become impatient when certainty disappears."

At that moment, Nathaniel understood something chilling.

The fall hadn't been caused by anger.

May you like

It had been caused by timing.

Someone believed Margaret needed to disappear before the wedding could take place.
