Chapter 2 – Thirty Steps

The hearing ended shortly after noon.

The judge ordered both parties to return in thirty days after additional financial disclosures.

Richard was furious.

Vanessa was even angrier.

Outside, reporters gathered near the courthouse steps.

Khloe chose to leave through the main entrance.

She refused to hide.

As Harrison paused to answer a question from another attorney, Khloe slowly descended the marble staircase.

Vanessa caught up to her.

"You've already lost."

Khloe didn't respond.

She simply continued walking.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You really think he'll ever choose you?"

Khloe turned calmly.

"I stopped asking him to choose a long time ago."

Witnesses later gave nearly identical statements.

Vanessa suddenly thrust both hands forward.

Khloe lost her balance.

Everything happened in seconds.

People screamed.

Briefcases fell.

Phones hit the ground.

Harrison spun around just in time to see his sister falling.

He reached her only after she came to rest at the bottom of the staircase.

He pressed trembling fingers against her wrist.

"Khloe."

She opened her eyes briefly.

"The baby..."

"I know."

"Please..."

"I know."

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

As they loaded Khloe into the ambulance, Harrison stood.

His tailored suit was stained with his sister's blood.

He looked toward Richard.

"You didn't move."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I..."

"You didn't move."

Those four words carried more weight than any shout ever could.

Hospital physicians later confirmed that Khloe and the baby survived after emergency treatment.

Harrison quietly thanked every doctor before walking into the hospital's family waiting room.

Then he made one phone call.

"Execute everything."

Across Pennsylvania, court orders were immediately filed.

Bank accounts froze.

Property transfers stopped.

Federal warrants became active.

The legal war had begun.
