Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF A LIFE

News of the hospital lockdown reached the media before sunset.

The foundation issued a brief statement confirming that a senior physician had been suspended during an active investigation.

It did not release my name.

That protection lasted less than an hour.

A video of Vanessa pushing me spread across social media.

Another clip showed Richard calling me his niece.

Reporters gathered outside every hospital entrance.

They wanted to know why the chairman’s niece had been accused of stealing medication.

They wanted to know why Adrian Cross had been escorted from the building.

They wanted scandal.

The foundation needed truth.

Richard offered to take me to his home.

I refused.

My own house had become evidence.

Police searched it that evening.

They found a locked cabinet inside Adrian’s study.

It contained a second phone, financial ledgers, and copies of confidential patient records.

The records belonged to patients enrolled in the Cardiac Innovation Initiative.

Many were low-income patients who had agreed to experimental procedures because the foundation promised to cover their treatment.

Several records showed costs that patients had never incurred.

A twenty-minute consultation had been billed as a complex procedure.

Standard devices had been listed as advanced custom implants.

Operations performed by junior doctors had been billed under Adrian’s name.

The fraud was larger than eighteen million dollars.

Preliminary estimates placed it closer to forty-two million.

The outside consulting companies received part of the money.

The rest passed through vendor contracts controlled by Samuel and Vanessa’s brother, Lucas Cole.

Lucas disappeared before police reached his apartment.

His accounts had been emptied.

His passport showed no recorded departure from the country.

Marcus believed he was still nearby.

I spent the night in a protected guest suite at Richard’s home.

I could not sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Adrian offering his hand to me in the atrium.

The gesture had looked gentle.

Now I understood how much cruelty could hide inside a performance.

At two in the morning, my phone rang.

The call came from an unknown number.

I answered without speaking.

For several seconds, I heard only breathing.

Then Adrian’s voice filled the silence.

“Claire.”

I sat up.

He had been released temporarily while prosecutors reviewed the evidence.

A court order prohibited him from contacting me.

“You are violating the protective order.”

“Please listen.”

“I listened for eleven years.”

“This has gone too far.”

“You tried to have me arrested.”

“I was trying to contain a situation.”

“You increased my life insurance.”

“That was part of our financial planning.”

“You told Samuel to use a contingency.”

“I meant stopping you from going to Richard.”

“How?”

Adrian was silent.

I pressed the recording button on the second phone Marcus had given me.

“You knew what Samuel planned.”

“No.”

“You knew enough to benefit from it.”

“I never wanted you dead.”

The sentence chilled me.

He had not said he wanted me safe.

He had said he never wanted me dead.

There was a difference.

“What did you want?”

“I wanted the files.”

“You could have asked.”

“You would have refused.”

“Yes.”

His voice hardened.

“Do you understand what you destroyed today?”

“Your reputation?”

“Years of work.”

“You stole money from sick patients.”

“I redirected funds to research.”

“You bought Vanessa an apartment.”

“That was not foundation money.”

“Then explain it to the auditors.”

Adrian breathed heavily.

“We can still control this.”

“There is no ‘we’ anymore.”

“Claire, you are my wife.”

“Not for much longer.”

I ended the call.

Ten seconds later, another message arrived.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR UNCLE TOO.

I stared at the words.

Then I forwarded the recording and message to Marcus.

By sunrise, investigators had discovered what Adrian meant.

One of the fraudulent contracts carried Richard Bennett’s electronic signature.
