Chapter 8 — Rafael’s Last Warning

The vault was located beneath an old bank near the Alameda Central.
Renata entered with Lucía, Reyes, and Octavio.
Inside Rafael’s box lay a black notebook, a flash drive, and a sealed letter.
Renata opened the letter first.
Dear Renata,
If you are reading this, I failed to stop them.
I am sorry that my decision to notice your talent may have brought you into danger.
Evangelina believes people are either useful or threatening. You became both.
Do not trust Alonso’s affection when money is involved. Do not trust Octavio’s silence when family reputation is involved. And do not believe the lies they may tell you about your own intelligence.
The accounts are hidden inside ordinary vendor payments. Follow the companies that repeatedly invoice round numbers. The final ledger is on the drive.
Most important: if they begin blaming you publicly, it means they are preparing to remove you privately.
Leave immediately.
Rafael
Renata read the last line twice.
Preparing to remove you privately.
Octavio turned away.
Reyes connected the flash drive to an isolated computer.
The files contained years of records.
Rafael had traced money from public construction contracts into shell companies controlled by Evangelina, Alonso, and several political intermediaries.
He had also recorded meetings.
In one audio file, Alonso complained that Renata was beginning to ask too many questions.
Evangelina answered, “Then give her a reason to doubt herself.”
Another recording took place six months later.
Alonso said, “The doctor says pregnancy is still possible.”
Evangelina replied, “That was never the point. A child complicates ownership.”
Renata covered her mouth.
The years of insults about infertility had not been about an heir.
Evangelina had never wanted Renata to have a child.
A child would have strengthened Renata’s legal claim within the family and made any suspicious disappearance more difficult.
In a third recording, made only three weeks before the anniversary dinner, Alonso sounded frightened.
“She found one of the accounts.”
Evangelina’s response was calm.
“Then the dinner will provide witnesses.”
“For what?”
“That she drank too much. That she was emotional. That she left upset.”
Renata felt the blood drain from her face.
The plate.
The humiliation.
The laughter.
They had been creating a story.
Renata would leave the restaurant distraught.
Something would happen afterward.
And fourteen relatives would remember an unstable woman storming away after embarrassing herself.
Lucía paused the audio.
“Now we know what the anniversary plan was.”
Octavio sat down heavily.
“My wife intended to kill her.”
Reyes corrected him.
“We know she discussed creating a cover story. We still need direct evidence of an intended attack.”
Renata looked at the black notebook.
The last pages contained a list of vehicles.
One license plate was circled in red.
She recognized it.
It belonged to the black SUV Alonso had insisted she use that evening.
The vehicle waited in the restaurant garage.
Reyes called the bomb unit.
The examination took two hours.
They found no explosive.
Instead, they discovered that the brake line had been partially cut.
The damage was designed to worsen gradually after several kilometers.
Renata imagined leaving the restaurant.
Upset.
Alone.
Driving downhill toward her apartment.
Her hands began to shake for the first time all day.
Octavio placed a hand near hers but did not touch her.
“I am sorry.”
She looked at him.
“You watched your wife humiliate me for six years.”
“I thought it was dislike.”
“You watched your son laugh.”
“I thought he was weak.”
“You thought many things because thinking was easier than asking.”
Octavio lowered his head.
Renata stood.
“Your apology does not make you innocent.”
“I know.”
“No. You are only beginning to know.”
Reyes’s phone rang.
He listened, then looked at the group.
“Víctor Salgado has agreed to cooperate.”
“About Rafael?” Octavio asked.
“About Rafael, the brake line, and where Evangelina and Alonso are hiding.”
Renata’s heart tightened.
“Where?”
“An Ibarra-owned ranch outside Valle de Bravo.”
The same region where Rafael had died.
The same ranch Alonso had invited Renata to visit three months earlier.
Reyes gathered the files.
“We move tonight.”
Renata looked at the key still lying beside Rafael’s letter.
A dead man had seen the trap years before everyone else.
Now his evidence might finally close it.
But before officers left the vault, another file appeared on the drive.
It was labeled:
OCTAVIO — AUTHORIZATION.
The room became silent.
Octavio stared at the screen.
May you like
Renata turned toward him.
“What did you authorize?”
