Chapter 1: A Mother’s Fury

The cry echoed through the grand ballroom like shattered glass.
“Elena!”
The little girl's frightened voice cut through the orchestra, silencing every violin in an instant.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead as more than four hundred guests turned toward the scene unfolding near the entrance.
Eight-year-old Elena Reyes stood trembling in her pink dress, tears filling her wide brown eyes.
Wrapped tightly around her tiny wrist was the manicured hand of Victoria Ashcroft.
The woman every newspaper called the Queen of High Society.
The chairwoman of the Ashcroft Foundation.
The wife of one of the city's richest developers.
"You're filthy," Victoria hissed quietly enough that only Elena could hear. "Children like you don't belong among respectable families."
She jerked the little girl toward the door.
Elena stumbled, nearly falling onto the polished marble floor.
"Mom!"
Across the ballroom, Sophia Reyes dropped the champagne glass she had been holding.
It exploded against the marble.
She didn't even notice.
Her entire world had narrowed to one thing.
Her daughter.
Sophia ran.
Guests instinctively stepped aside as she crossed the ballroom.
When she reached Elena, she gently pulled the child behind her.
Victoria frowned.
"Control your daughter."
Sophia's voice was terrifyingly calm.
"Take your hand off my child."
"I already did."
Victoria smiled.
"You should be thanking me. Someone had to remove the trash before it embarrassed everyone."
A heavy silence settled over the ballroom.
No one defended Sophia.
No one challenged Victoria.
Everyone knew what happened to people who crossed the Ashcroft family.
Then Sophia spoke five quiet words.
"You made one fatal mistake today."
Victoria laughed.
May you like
"And what's that?"
"You touched my daughter."
