Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Created an Orphan

The celebration had become an investigation.

Police detectives arrived within minutes.

No guest was allowed to leave.

Colonel Vance calmly laid every document across the grand banquet table.

"Major Daniel Cross and his wife disappeared one week after returning home from military service," he explained.

"Authorities believed their vehicle had plunged into a river during a storm."

"But we never recovered the child."

Detectives listened carefully.

"So what happened?"

Vance looked toward Victoria.

"I think someone in this room already knows."

Victoria stood abruptly.

"This is absurd."

Her voice shook for the first time all evening.

"My family has nothing to do with military investigations."

Vance's eyes narrowed.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain why your late husband purchased Ravenwood Children's Home one month after the Cross family vanished."

The room exploded into whispers.

Victoria's face turned pale.

Business reporters immediately began recording.

One detective opened decades-old financial records.

There it was.

A forgotten acquisition.

A failing orphanage purchased through one of Sterling Holdings' shell companies.

Maya stared at Victoria in disbelief.

"I grew up there."

Victoria said nothing.

The detective continued reading.

"Three months after the purchase..."

His eyes widened.

"...all admission records from that year disappeared."

The silence became unbearable.

Then an elderly woman slowly stood from the back of the ballroom.

She leaned heavily on a cane.

"I remember that little girl."

Every head turned.

She introduced herself as Eleanor Briggs.

Former nurse at Ravenwood Children's Home.

"I was ordered never to speak."

Tears rolled down her face.

"The child arrived with burns, bruises, and this medal tied around her neck."

She pointed toward Maya.

"They told us her parents abandoned her."

She shook her head.

"It was a lie."

Victoria whispered,

"Sit down."

But Eleanor continued.

"I saw Mrs. Sterling herself remove the medal."

The room gasped.

"She said no child carrying that name could ever threaten her family's future."

Maya felt her heart stop.

Victoria had not simply insulted an orphan.

She had helped create one.

Detectives approached Victoria.

"You are under investigation for kidnapping, evidence tampering, fraud, and obstruction."

Victoria tried to step backward.

Her designer heels slipped against polished marble.
