Chapter 13 - THE HEIR THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Daniel still had a pulse.

It was weak.

But it was there.

Vance’s team carried him to the boat while Ruth contacted emergency services through a secure channel.

A medical helicopter intercepted them over the mainland.

Maya remained beside Daniel during the flight.

She held his hand while medics fought to stabilize his blood pressure.

The bullet had damaged his liver.

Internal bleeding was severe.

The hospital prepared an operating room before they landed.

Daniel was taken through the doors without regaining consciousness.

Maya stood in the corridor wearing his blood across both hands.

Amelia tried to lead her toward a chair.

Maya could not move.

“I waited too long.”

“To say you loved him?”

“Yes.”

“He heard you.”

“What if those are the last words he hears?”

“Then he heard the truth.”

Maya looked at her mother.

“I was punishing him.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

“I wanted him to feel what I felt in that ballroom.”

“That is human.”

“It does not make it kind.”

“No.”

Amelia held her.

“You do not have to become perfect because terrible people were cruel to you.”

“You are allowed to be wounded.”

“You are allowed to make mistakes after the wound.”

Maya leaned against her mother.

For the first time since the medal fell, she let someone else hold her together.

Thomas Vance was transported under military guard.

His chest wound was serious but survivable.

Victoria escaped the island through the hidden passage.

The helicopter had been a diversion.

Investigators found tire tracks leading toward a private marina.

By the time authorities secured the coastline, she was gone.

Charles Sterling agreed to cooperate after learning that Thomas had survived.

He requested immunity.

Ramirez refused.

Charles lowered his demand to protection from Victoria.

He claimed she would kill him before trial.

Maya felt no sympathy.

But Charles possessed information that could locate her.

He was transferred to a secure interview room.

Maya watched through one-way glass.

Charles looked older than he had at the banquet.

Without his tailored suit and controlled audience, he seemed smaller.

Ramirez sat across from him.

“Where would Victoria go?”

“She maintained identities I knew nothing about.”

“You financed them.”

“She controlled several private accounts.”

“What does she want now?”

“The reserve fund.”

“The testament proves Daniel and Noah control it.”

“Without Daniel’s voluntary authorization, she cannot access the money.”

Charles looked toward the glass.

He could not see Maya.

“But she may not need voluntary authorization.”

“What does that mean?”

“The reserve system was built with coercion protocols.”

“Thomas designed a method to simulate consent through medical stimulation.”

Maya entered the room.

Charles stared at her.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“You brought all of this down.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“Where is the equipment?”

Charles swallowed.

“Victoria kept a private medical laboratory.”

“Where?”

“Beneath the Sterling Foundation children’s hospital.”

Maya’s anger turned cold.

A facility created publicly to help children concealed equipment designed to manipulate blood heirs.

“Is that where she will take Daniel?”

“If he survives surgery, she will try.”

“How would she reach him inside a guarded hospital?”

Charles gave a tired smile.

“The Sterlings funded half the hospitals in this country.”

Ramirez immediately doubled Daniel’s security.

His medical team was replaced with vetted military surgeons.

Blood samples were cataloged and guarded.

No one entered the floor without physical identification.

The operation lasted six hours.

At 4:30 a.m., the surgeon came into the waiting room.

Daniel had survived.

His condition remained critical.

Maya closed her eyes.

The relief nearly dropped her to the floor.

“Can I see him?”

“Briefly.”

She entered the intensive care room.

Machines surrounded Daniel.

A ventilator controlled his breathing.

His face was pale beneath the hospital lights.

Maya sat beside him.

“You heard me.”

She held his hand carefully.

“I know you did.”

“You do not get to leave after making me say it.”

The monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Maya lowered her head.

“I do love you.”

“I also hate what you allowed.”

“I do not know what happens to us.”

“But you are Noah’s father.”

“You are Evelyn’s son.”

“You are Adrian’s son.”

“You are not the name they gave you.”

“You get to decide who you become.”

His fingers moved faintly beneath hers.

Maya looked up.

The movement did not repeat.

A nurse assured her that reflexes were common.

Maya chose to believe otherwise.

At noon, federal financial regulators froze the Sterling-Vaughn reserve.

The account contained eleven billion dollars.

Legal documents identified Daniel and Noah as joint controllers.

A public battle began immediately.

Sterling shareholders claimed the money belonged to the corporation.

Vaughn attorneys claimed the archive evidence had been obtained illegally.

Victims of the conspiracy filed claims across multiple states.

Maya released a statement through Agent Ramirez.

The money would not be treated as family wealth.

It would remain frozen until courts identified the people harmed by Sterling and Vaughn operations.

News channels repeated her words throughout the day.

The nameless orphan Victoria had mocked now controlled the future of an empire.

Maya refused every interview.

She remained beside Daniel and Noah.

Amelia began physical rehabilitation in the same secure hospital.

Vance spent his time between his daughter’s room and Thomas’s guarded ward.

The brothers did not speak again.

Three days later, Agent Grant requested another meeting.

Her condition had improved.

Maya brought Ramirez.

Grant gave them an access card.

“This opens the underground laboratory beneath the Sterling children’s hospital.”

“How did you get it?”

“Victoria instructed me to move medical equipment last month.”

“What kind of equipment?”

“Neural stimulation systems.”

“Blood authentication readers.”

“And a pediatric containment unit.”

Maya felt sick.

“For Noah?”

“I think so.”

Grant handed them a list of names.

Doctors.

Technicians.

Foundation executives.

One name stood out.

Dr. Claire Monroe.

The woman who had called Vance from Saint Catherine’s.

Maya stared at it.

“She helped us locate Amelia.”

Grant shook her head.

“She helped Vaughn move Amelia.”

“The phone call brought everyone to the burning hospital while the transport van escaped.”

Ramirez looked at Maya.

The rescue at Lake Ashford may have happened only because Shaw’s plan failed.

Claire Monroe remained free.

She had access to the secure hospital.

Maya ran toward Noah’s room.

Agent Reed stood outside.

“Has anyone entered?”

“Only the pediatric specialist.”

“What specialist?”

“Dr. Monroe.”

Maya pushed through the door.

The crib was empty.

A nurse lay unconscious near the wall.

The window was open.

A maintenance platform hung outside.

Maya rushed toward Daniel’s intensive care room.

His bed was also empty.

Both Daniel and Noah had disappeared.

A message glowed on the medical monitor.

THE HEIRS BELONG TO THE FAMILY.

COME TO THE FOUNDATION HOSPITAL.

May you like

Maya stared at the words.

Victoria had taken them both.
