Chapter 2: The Truth Locked Away
Attorney David Monroe entered through the ballroom doors carrying a sealed archive box.
He walked directly to the stage.
"I represent Amelia Carter."
He opened the box.
Inside were adoption records.
Hospital documents.
Court filings.
Old newspaper clippings.
One by one, he placed them across the head table.
"Twelve years ago," he began, "the Lancaster family quietly changed the public record after a custody dispute involving their youngest daughter."
Margaret interrupted.
"Those documents are private."
"They were," David answered calmly.
"Until they became evidence."
The groom looked at his grandfather.
"Is it true?"
The elderly man slowly closed his eyes.
"I thought..."
"...I was protecting the family."
Amelia's voice remained steady.
"You weren't protecting the family."
"You were protecting the family name."
She explained that after the death of her father, disagreements over inheritance and reputation had torn the household apart.
Rather than face a public scandal, influential relatives arranged for Amelia to be raised under another surname by relatives outside the city.
