Chapter 3: The Woman Who Built the Bank
That afternoon, Amelia requested every department manager attend the auditorium.
More than six hundred employees gathered.
Some nervous.
Some curious.
Daniel stood near the back.
He had never seen the Chairwoman speak before.
Amelia walked onto the stage without notes.
"When I was nineteen," she began, "I came into a bank wearing clothes very much like these."
She looked down at her plain coat.
"I had thirty-seven dollars."
The audience became silent.
"I asked for a small business loan."
She smiled faintly.
"The manager never looked at my business plan."
"He looked at my shoes."
Soft laughter rippled through the room.
"He told me successful people didn't dress like me."
She looked across the auditorium.
"I walked out."
"Five years later, I opened my own investment company."
"Ten years later, I bought the bank that rejected me."
The room erupted into shocked whispers.
Richard himself had never heard the full story.
Amelia continued.
"I promised myself something that day."
"No customer would ever again be judged before being heard."
She turned toward Daniel.
"Would you please come up here?"
Daniel's heart nearly stopped.
He slowly walked onto the stage.
"I've embarrassed myself enough today," he said quietly.
Amelia smiled.
"No."
"You reminded this bank of its principles."
She faced the audience.
"This man stopped me."
Several employees looked uncomfortable.
"He asked no rude questions."
"He never mocked me."
"He simply enforced policy equally."
She nodded approvingly.
"That is exactly what integrity looks like."
The room broke into applause.
Daniel stood speechless.
Then Amelia looked toward the executives seated in the front row.
"But integrity is meaningless..."
"...if leadership doesn't reward it."
She removed a folder from her handbag.
"Effective today..."
"...Daniel Foster becomes Director of Security Operations."
The auditorium gasped.
His salary would nearly triple.
Daniel stared at her.
"I've never managed people."
"You've already demonstrated the hardest qualification."
