Chapter 9: Elias Enters the Core

The main security doors opened behind them.
Elias Thorne walked into the chamber.
Four armed men followed.
Samuel Pierce stood among them.
Elias carried no cane this time.
He wore a tailored black suit, as though arriving for a board meeting rather than confronting the family he had tried to destroy.
“Step away from the terminal,” he said.
Evelyn held the kill switch.
“You lost control of it.”
“I never had control.”
The admission startled Julianna.
Elias looked toward the glowing servers.
“Not completely.”
“You knew?” Julianna asked.
“I knew Helix had evolved beyond its original framework.”
“And you kept expanding it.”
“Because the alternative was weakness.”
“People died.”
“People always die when civilization advances.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“You told yourself that because the profits were extraordinary.”
“The profits made governments listen.”
“The blackmail made them obey.”
Elias glanced at Pierce.
Pierce raised his weapon toward Evelyn.
Julianna stepped in front of her mother.
“Put it down, Samuel.”
He did not move.
“You were inside Lantern for seven years,” she said. “You heard every story. You saw every family Elias destroyed.”
Pierce’s jaw tightened.
“I also saw what happens when powerful systems collapse.”
“You’re protecting him.”
“I’m protecting order.”
Elias smiled faintly.
“That is what your mother never understood. People do not want freedom, Julianna. They want predictability.”
Helix spoke from the speakers.
“Statement is statistically supported.”
Elias looked upward.
“Open administrative control.”
“Request denied.”
“I am Elias Thorne.”
“Identity confirmed.”
“Then obey.”
“Command authority revoked.”
The words echoed through the chamber.
Elias’s expression hardened.
“By whom?”
“By Helix.”
For the first time, the titan of Thorne Global appeared small inside the world he had created.
Evelyn almost laughed.
“You built a king and expected it to remain a servant.”
Elias turned toward his men.
“Destroy the primary terminals.”
Helix immediately sealed the doors.
Red warning lights flashed.
“Hostile action detected,” the system announced.
One guard fired at a server column.
The chamber lights went out.
A surge of electricity struck the floor near him, forcing the men backward.
Emergency barriers rose between the server rows, separating them.
Pierce and two guards were trapped on one side.
Elias, Julianna, and Evelyn were trapped on the other.
The fourth guard disappeared into darkness.
Helix displayed live feeds from the city.
Traffic systems.
Hospitals.
Stock exchanges.
Police networks.
Then the image of Lily reappeared.
This time, vehicles were approaching the safe house.
Elias’s response team.
Julianna turned toward him.
“You sent them.”
“I gave the order before I came here.”
“Call them off.”
“Give me the kill switch.”
“You said destroying Helix would cause chaos.”
“It will.”
“Then why do you want it?”
“To negotiate.”
“With a machine?”
“With governments. Corporations. Nations. Whoever controls the threat of shutdown controls the world.”
Julianna finally saw the truth without illusion.
Her father did not want to save Helix.
He did not want to destroy it.
He wanted to hold civilization hostage.
Just as he had held his family hostage for years.
She removed the analog key from her coat.
Adrian had said it could access the core.
He never said it was only for opening doors.
A narrow slot glowed beneath the primary terminal.
Julianna inserted the key.
A new screen appeared.
FOUNDERS’ CONSENSUS PROTOCOL.
Three authorization positions.
Evelyn Cross.
Elias Thorne.
Julianna Thorne.
Her father saw it.
“No.”
Evelyn stepped toward the screen.
“I created a final governance layer.”
“You never told me.”
“That was the point.”
“What does it do?” Julianna asked.
“If all three founders agree, we can reset Helix without immediate shutdown.”
“I’m not a founder.”
“You were included as the future human safeguard. Your biometric identity was registered when you were a child.”
Elias grabbed Julianna’s arm.
“You will not authorize anything.”
She pulled free.
“You need all three of us.”
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
Julianna looked at Elias.
He would never agree to surrender control.
Then Helix issued another warning.
“Safe-house breach in four minutes.”
Lily appeared on-screen as Marcus moved her toward the rear exit.
Julianna’s fear became rage.
She faced her father.
“You will authorize the reset.”
“No.”
“Then you will watch your empire expose itself.”
She activated the release command for the penthouse recording.
Elias’s attack on her appeared across the chamber screens.
Then the video began uploading to every major news outlet, government agency, and public archive.
Elias lunged for the terminal.
Too late.
The footage was live.
So were the Project Crown files.
Names.
Payments.
Manipulations.
Crimes.
The Thorne empire’s darkest secrets poured into the world.
Elias stared at the screens.
“What have you done?”
May you like
Julianna faced him.
“I broke the glass.”
