Chapter 12 - THE COMPETENCY HEARING

The courthouse steps were covered with reporters the next morning.

My graduation video had been viewed more than twelve million times.

Some headlines called me a whistleblower.

Others called me unstable.

My father had hired a public relations firm to spread the second version.

Inside the courtroom, he sat beside three attorneys.

My mother sat behind him.

Ethan remained in the hospital under police guard.

Judge Raymond Bell entered at nine o’clock.

His name appeared twice in my grandfather’s ledger.

Agent Grant had already submitted that information to federal authorities.

But the judge refused to remove himself from the hearing.

My father’s attorney stood first.

“Emily Bennett has demonstrated increasingly irrational and dangerous behavior.”

He displayed photographs of my destroyed apartment.

The images had been edited to make it appear that I had caused the damage myself.

He presented the false medical records.

He presented statements from family employees claiming I suffered violent outbursts.

He even presented an email in which I supposedly threatened to burn Bennett Technologies to the ground.

I had never written it.

My father watched the judge with complete confidence.

Then my attorney stood.

Her name was Natalie Ward.

Agent Grant had introduced us less than twelve hours earlier.

“Your Honor, before addressing these fabricated records, we request permission to play a recording made yesterday.”

My father’s confidence weakened.

The court heard his voice explaining how the university would be forced to revoke my degree.

We played Ethan’s confession from outside my apartment.

We showed the recovered camera footage.

We presented Dr. Lane’s sworn statement.

The judge listened without expression.

When the evidence ended, he looked at me.

“Miss Bennett, did you illegally obtain confidential company information?”

“My software identified transfers made through a foundation bearing my family name.”

“That was not my question.”

“The records were stored inside a system built from my stolen code.”

“Again, that was not my question.”

I finally understood how the hearing would end.

The evidence did not matter to him.

He had already chosen.

Judge Bell lifted his pen.

“This court finds sufficient reason to appoint a temporary guardian over Miss Bennett’s financial and intellectual property interests.”

My father exhaled.

My mother stared at the floor.

I felt Natalie’s hand tighten around my arm.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Agent Grant entered with six federal officers.

The judge slammed his gavel.

“You are interrupting a proceeding.”

Agent Grant approached the bench.

“Judge Raymond Bell, you are under arrest for bribery, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.”

The courtroom exploded.

Judge Bell stood.

“You have no authority to arrest me in my courtroom.”

A federal prosecutor entered behind Agent Grant.

“We have a warrant signed by the chief federal judge.”

My father rose from his chair.

One of his attorneys whispered urgently to him.

The judge’s arrest meant the competency order had no legal effect.

But my father was no longer watching the bench.

He was watching the rear exit.

He ran.

Federal officers moved after him.

My father shoved a reporter aside and disappeared into the corridor.

Agent Grant shouted into her radio.

“Seal every exit.”

A moment later, an officer answered.

“Richard Bennett has left the building.”

“How?”

“A courthouse security vehicle took him through the underground garage.”

“Who authorized it?”

The officer paused.

“Claire Bennett.”

Every head in the courtroom turned toward my mother.

But her seat was empty.
