Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Marriage

The board members began whispering among themselves.

One by one, people started asking uncomfortable questions.

"Wait..."

"Didn't Julian say he planned everything?"

"I thought he managed every fundraiser himself."

One elderly donor stood.

"No."

"He didn't."

She turned toward me.

"You were the woman who stayed until midnight after my husband collapsed three years ago."

"You personally drove me home."

"I never forgot your kindness."

Another donor nodded.

"And when our shipment disappeared last winter..."

"You solved it."

Not Julian.

You.

The stories kept coming.

Every successful gala.

Every rescued fundraiser.

Every crisis.

Every miracle.

My work.

His credit.

Julian's face drained of color.

"Claire," he whispered.

"Tell them they're exaggerating."

I looked at him.

Really looked at the man I'd spent twenty-two years trying to impress.

The man who had convinced me I wasn't smart enough.

Talented enough.

Interesting enough.

Without realizing it...

I'd been carrying both our lives.

"No," I answered quietly.

"They're finally telling the truth."

The chairman of the charity board slowly stood.

His expression was grim.

"Julian..."

"Did you knowingly claim your wife's work as your own?"

Julian hesitated.

That single pause became his answer.

Within minutes...

The board voted unanimously.

He was removed as chairman before the gala had even ended.

Applause filled the ballroom.

This time...

It wasn't for him.
