CHAPTER 2 — The Choice That Broke Everything

The front door slammed shut behind Ethan Caldwell.

His eyes immediately found the two women.

Olivia—his eight-month pregnant wife—lay crumpled at the bottom of the staircase, one hand protecting her stomach.

Standing above her was Vanessa.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect tears.

"Ethan!" Vanessa cried, clutching her own wrist. "She attacked me!"

Olivia stared at her in disbelief.

"You pushed me..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"My baby..."

Before Olivia could finish, another pair of footsteps echoed through the foyer.

Margaret Caldwell.

Ethan's mother.

She hurried to Vanessa's side without even glancing at her pregnant daughter-in-law.

"Oh, sweetheart, are you hurt?"

Vanessa nodded dramatically.

"I tried to stop her from falling."

Margaret wrapped an arm around the younger woman.

Then she looked at Olivia with unmistakable irritation.

"Look what you've done."

Olivia couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"I'm the one on the floor."

"You've always been jealous of Vanessa," Margaret snapped. "Now you've embarrassed this family."

Ethan remained frozen.

His wife reached toward him.

"Ethan..."

For one agonizing second, she believed he would come to her.

Instead...

He helped Vanessa sit down.

Olivia felt something inside her break.

Not a bone.

Trust.

Moments later, paramedics arrived.

Doctors confirmed the baby had survived the fall.

Barely.

Olivia was placed on strict bed rest.

As Ethan drove home that evening, he convinced himself he had done the right thing.

Until his phone rang.

It was the family's longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Eleanor Brooks.

Her voice trembled.

"Mr. Caldwell..."

"I think you should see the security footage before anyone deletes it."
