Chapter Three: The Locked Study

Victoria was charged with attempted murder and taken into custody.

Her attorneys secured an emergency hearing within hours.

By sunset, television crews surrounded the courthouse, and every major news channel carried footage of Victoria being led through a side entrance.

The Montgomery family released a statement claiming she had suffered a misunderstanding while attempting to assist her injured daughter-in-law.

No one believed it.

The hospital recording spread online before midnight.

Daniel did not release it.

Neither did the police.

Someone inside the hospital had filmed Victoria’s arrest through the hallway window and uploaded it anonymously.

The Montgomery name began collapsing under the weight of public suspicion.

Emily, however, was not interested in public humiliation.

She wanted proof.

The evidence she had gathered was hidden inside Ethan’s locked study at the Upper East Side townhouse.

The room contained his private computer, paper ledgers, property records, and a small bronze sculpture of a horse.

Inside the sculpture was a flash drive.

Emily had copied everything onto it two days before her fall.

Detective Ortiz obtained a search warrant the following morning.

Ethan objected immediately.

“That house belongs to the Montgomery Family Trust,” he told investigators. “My wife had no authority to remove business records.”

Lena stared at him.

“She lived there.”

“She was a guest.”

Emily heard about the comment from Daniel.

A guest.

After four years of marriage.

After decorating the house, hosting his donors, caring for his father during surgery, and enduring Victoria’s constant reminders that she did not belong.

Ethan still considered her a temporary inconvenience.

The police entered the townhouse shortly after noon.

Daniel accompanied them as an adviser because of his financial crimes experience.

The study door was locked.

Ethan claimed he had misplaced the key.

Police opened it.

The room had been emptied.

Shelves once filled with binders were bare.

The desktop computer was gone.

The bronze horse had disappeared.

Only faint rectangles in the dust showed where objects had stood.

Lena turned to Ethan.

“When was this room cleared?”

“I don’t know.”

“You live here.”

“I’ve been at the hospital.”

A housekeeper named Rosa stood in the corridor with her hands clasped tightly.

Lena noticed her.

“Did you see anyone remove items from this room?”

Rosa looked at Ethan.

He gave her a small warning glance.

“No,” she said.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Rosa, Emily may have been nearly killed because of what was in this room.”

Rosa lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t see anything.”

Ethan exhaled.

Then Rosa added, “But I heard something.”

Ethan turned sharply.

“What?”

Rosa looked directly at Lena.

“Mr. Montgomery came home at three in the morning after Mrs. Emily fell. He carried boxes out of the study.”

“That’s a lie,” Ethan said.

Rosa ignored him.

“His mother was with him. They told security to disable the hallway cameras.”

Daniel asked, “Where did they take the boxes?”

“I don’t know. A black van waited behind the house.”

Lena stepped toward Ethan.

“You said you never left the hospital that night.”

“I was upset. I don’t remember everything.”

Rosa swallowed hard.

“There is more.”

She led them downstairs to the wine cellar.

Behind a rack of rare bottles stood a narrow service passage used during the townhouse’s original construction.

Inside the passage, Rosa removed a loose brick.

She pulled out a small bronze horse.

Daniel stared at it.

“Emily gave it to me,” Rosa explained. “She said if anything happened to her, I should hide it before Mr. Ethan returned.”

Ethan lunged forward.

An officer blocked him.

Daniel opened the base of the sculpture.

The compartment was empty.

The flash drive was gone.

Ethan’s panic faded.

A faint smile touched his lips.

Then Rosa reached into her apron pocket.

“She told me the horse was too obvious.”

She placed a black flash drive in Lena’s hand.

“She hid the real one inside my sewing kit.”

Ethan stopped smiling.
