Chapter 18 - The Trial

The courthouse steps were packed the morning the trial began.
Cameras followed every movement.
Robert Crane entered through a secured entrance.
Patrick Sloan followed.
Victoria arrived last.
For one second, she looked toward Mark.
He felt almost nothing.
That surprised him.
Months earlier, he had planned to marry her.
Now she looked like a stranger wearing the face of someone he once knew.
The prosecution presented the financial scheme first.
Sarah’s ledger.
Bank transfers.
Fake charities.
Government contracts.
Then they presented the conspiracy against Mark.
Fabricated photographs.
The false psychological reports.
The recordings of Liam.
The sedatives.
Jurors listened to Victoria ordering a frightened five-year-old boy to say his father hurt him.
Several looked away.
Mark did too.
Then Elena testified.
Victoria watched her carefully.
The prosecutor asked what happened the day Mark discovered the abuse.
Elena described finding Victoria gripping Liam’s arm.
She described stepping between them.
She described the slap.
She described Liam’s terror.
The prosecutor asked.
“Why did you intervene?”
Elena looked toward Mark.
Then toward Liam’s empty seat.
He had not been brought to court.
“Because he was a child.”
“That’s all?”
Elena shook her head.
“That should be enough.”
The courtroom went silent.
Victoria’s attorney tried to portray Elena as a disgruntled employee who wanted control of the Ashford fortune.
Then he introduced the trust document naming Elena as backup guardian.
“What an extraordinary coincidence.”
Elena remained calm.
“I didn’t know the document existed.”
“You expect the jury to believe Sarah Ashford chose you after barely knowing you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Sarah knew my brother.”
The attorney smiled.
“And your brother is dead.”
“Yes.”
“Convenient.”
Mark’s hands tightened.
Elena did not react.
“My brother died because he tried to expose the people sitting behind you.”
The defense attorney’s smile disappeared.
Then prosecutors introduced Mateo’s files.
The attack collapsed.
Aaron Bell testified against his sister.
Julia testified against Crane.
Sloan testified against everyone after reaching his own agreement.
Finally, Victoria took the stand.
Her lawyers advised against it.
She insisted.
She described meeting Crane years earlier.
The theft.
The lies.
Her new identity.
Her relationship with Mark.
Then the prosecutor asked.
“Did you love Mark Ashford?”
Victoria looked toward him.
“I thought I did.”
“Did you love Liam?”
Silence.
“No.”
The answer hit harder than Mark expected.
“Why did you hurt him?”
Victoria’s mouth trembled.
“Because he was always between me and everything I wanted.”
No one moved.
“He reminded Mark of Sarah.”
Her voice became bitter.
“He had her eyes.”
Mark felt Elena’s hand touch his arm.
Victoria continued.
“Every time Mark looked at Liam, Sarah was still in the room.”
The prosecutor asked.
“So you punished a child because his father loved his dead mother?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
That was the moment the case ended emotionally.
The legal arguments continued for days.
But everyone had heard the truth.
The verdict came after eleven hours.
Guilty.
Victoria cried.
Patrick Sloan lowered his head.
Crane did not react.
Mark felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
“What do you want to say to Victoria?”
Mark stopped.
He looked toward the cameras.
“Nothing.”
Then he walked away.

Some people did not deserve a final speech.
Some doors closed better in silence.
