Chapter 3: When the Masks Came Off

The following morning, the annual Rivas Foundation Gala proceeded exactly as scheduled.
Hundreds of donors filled the grand ballroom.
Television cameras lined the entrance.
Santiago arrived wearing an immaculate tuxedo, convinced he could still protect his public image.
He never reached the stage.
As he approached the podium, federal investigators entered through the main doors accompanied by court officers and forensic accountants.
The ballroom fell silent.
One investigator stepped forward.
"Santiago Rivas."
"You are being served with warrants related to fraud, conspiracy, document forgery, coercion, and domestic assault."
Guests stared in disbelief.
Board members exchanged nervous glances.
Beatriz attempted to intervene.
"This is absurd."
"We're respected people."
The lead investigator calmly placed another file onto the podium.
"These are the psychiatric documents prepared to falsely institutionalize Mrs. Valeria Salazar."
Another file followed.
"These are the insurance policies naming Mr. Rivas as beneficiary."
Then another.
"And these are recordings of the defendants discussing their plan."
The evidence was overwhelming.
Several executives quietly stood and walked away from the Rivas family.
No one defended them.
Not anymore.
Outside, reporters surrounded the building.
Questions echoed from every direction.
"Did you forge medical records?"
"Did you threaten your pregnant wife?"
"Were you planning to take custody of her child?"
Santiago searched desperately for someone to rescue him.
There was no one left.
The reputation he had spent years constructing collapsed in a single afternoon.
Meanwhile, I stood beside my father in a quiet hospital room where my doctor confirmed that my baby remained healthy.
