CHAPTER 3: THE FAMILY FALLS APART

Two weeks later, the Miller family's perfect image had collapsed.

The wedding video had never appeared online.

Rachel refused to let anyone profit from Mia's humiliation.

But every guest knew what had happened.

And people talked.

David returned to an empty house.

Julia had already moved into a small apartment with Mia.

The divorce papers were waiting on the kitchen counter.

Irreconcilable differences.

Request for sole physical custody.

Request for supervised visitation until the court completed its evaluation.

David stared at the documents for nearly an hour.

Then he called Julia.

She didn't answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Meanwhile, Margaret expected her son to defend her.

Instead, she found him standing outside her front door.

"I lost my wife."

Margaret crossed her arms.

"She manipulated everyone."

David shook his head.

"No."

"She recorded the truth."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"You'll find someone better."

David looked at his mother with exhausted eyes.

"I didn't lose Julia because of one recording."

"I lost her because every time she needed me..."

"...I chose you."

Those words struck Margaret harder than any argument.

David walked away.

He didn't come back.

For the first time in forty years...

Margaret ate dinner alone.

Across town, Julia focused on helping Mia heal.

The little girl stopped apologizing for accidents.

She started smiling again.

One evening she quietly asked,

"Mom..."

"Was Grandma right?"

Julia immediately knelt beside her.

"No."

"Not even a little."

"You are kind."

"You are brave."

"You are loved."

Mia wrapped her tiny arms around her mother.

"I believed her for a minute."

Julia kissed her forehead.

"Never let cruel people decide who you are."

"They only reveal who they are."

Outside the apartment window, spring slowly replaced winter.
