Chapter 20 - BEFORE DAWN

Six months after the morning Dominic secretly returned from London, another storm rolled across Newport.
At 5:07 a.m., Dominic walked into the servants’ pantry.
Emma was arranging breakfast trays.
She looked up.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Emma smiled.
“You came back?”
Dominic glanced at the clock.
“Apparently I have a habit.”
Emma laughed.
This time, there was no hidden fiancée.
No forged document.
No frightened child outside the door.
The mansion felt different now.
Natalie had started working again.
She had opened a foundation in Michael’s name to help widowed parents navigate estate and financial fraud.
Noah had returned to school.
He still slept with the hallway light on sometimes.
But not every night.
Brooke awaited trial.
Her father had accepted a plea agreement on several financial charges while prosecutors continued building the case connected to Michael.
Gerald Pike had lost his license and was cooperating fully.
Elliot had confessed.
The Mercer fortune had survived.
But Dominic no longer thought that was the important part.
Emma poured coffee.
“Couldn’t sleep?”
“No.”
“London again?”
“Boston.”
“Business?”
Dominic nodded.
Then he looked toward the hallway.
“And I wanted to be here before Noah woke up.”
Emma smiled.
“He has something for you.”
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
She pointed toward the breakfast table.
A handmade card sat beside Dominic’s place.
He opened it.
Inside was a drawing.
Three figures stood in front of Catherine’s cottage.
Natalie.
Noah.
Dominic.
Above them Noah had written.
FAMILY STAYS.
Dominic stared at it.
Emma pretended not to notice his eyes change.
Footsteps came from the hallway.
Noah appeared wearing pajamas.
He stopped when he saw Dominic.
“You’re home.”
Dominic placed the card down.
“I’m home.”
Noah ran toward him.
Dominic caught him.
Natalie appeared moments later.
She leaned against the doorway.
“What happened to the terrifying Dominic Mercer everyone talks about?”
Dominic looked at his nephew.
“Never met him.”
Natalie laughed.
Emma carried the breakfast tray toward the dining room.
Outside, rain covered the windows.
Inside, Catherine’s house was warm.
Dominic looked once toward the eastern side of the estate.
Six months earlier, he had returned before dawn because a frightened nine-year-old boy asked him a question.
He expected to test the loyalty of the woman he planned to marry.
Instead, he discovered stolen money.
A forged signature.
His mother’s missing jewelry.
A corrupted attorney.
A compromised security officer.
And the truth about a death his family had mourned as an accident.
Brooke had believed Dominic’s greatest weakness was his family.
She had been wrong.
His family was the reason she failed.
Natalie walked toward him.
“We’re taking Noah to the cemetery this afternoon.”
Dominic nodded.
“I’ll come.”
She smiled.
“I know.”
Dominic looked at the card again.
FAMILY STAYS.
For years, Catherine Mercer had tried to teach him that a house was not protected by gates.
A family was not protected by money.
And love was not protected by control.
It survived because someone chose to come back when something felt wrong.
Someone listened when a child was afraid.
Someone opened the door that others wanted kept closed.
Dominic had returned before dawn to discover whether Brooke Harrington could be trusted.
He discovered something far more important.
The people she had tried to remove were the only people who had never betrayed him.
And as the storm faded beyond the windows of Mercer House, Dominic finally understood why his mother had fought so hard to keep them together.
Not because blood made people loyal.
But because loyalty, proven when everything was at risk, was what made them family.
He folded Noah’s card and placed it carefully inside his coat.
Then he followed Natalie and Noah into the dining room.
For the first time since Catherine died, every chair that mattered was occupied.
And no one at the table was afraid of being told to leave.
