Chapter 2 – A Promise That Could Not Be Bought

Lucas knelt until he was at Hannah's eye level. The little girl looked as though she expected to be scolded for simply existing.
"No," he said gently. "You're not in trouble."
Hannah blinked.
"Not for waiting. Not for surviving."
She threw herself into Emma's side, clutching her sister's coat.
For the first time that night, Lucas realized something heartbreaking.
These girls apologized for things that were never their fault.
Child Services arrived just after one in the morning.
Two social workers entered the penthouse carrying folders and tired expressions. They had expected another wealthy businessman making a donation.
Instead, they found four frightened sisters asleep together on one enormous sofa beneath thick blankets.
None of them had let go of each other.
One worker quietly whispered, "They've done this at every shelter."
Lucas looked over.
"They refuse separate beds?"
The woman nodded.
"They've been split apart twice before. Every time they fought until they were reunited."
She opened the case file.
"Their mother, Olivia Carter, worked three jobs after her husband disappeared. She died from untreated pneumonia. Their aunt accepted temporary guardianship only because she thought there would be inheritance money."
"There wasn't?"
The social worker shook her head.
"The apartment was sold to cover medical debt."
Lucas stared through the windows toward the sleeping city.
"So she abandoned four children because they weren't worth anything."
The woman answered softly.
"Sadly... yes."
Something inside Lucas hardened.
Not with anger.
With certainty.
He remembered every foster family that smiled for interviews before sending him away a few weeks later.
He remembered learning that love could expire.
He would never allow these girls to learn that lesson again.
"I want to become their emergency guardian."
The room fell silent.
The senior social worker looked surprised.
"Mr. Bennett... that's not a decision people make overnight."
Lucas smiled sadly.
"No."
He looked toward the sisters.
"It's a decision life made for me twenty years ago."
Over the next several weeks, lawyers, psychologists, and family court investigators filled Lucas's calendar.
The media learned that America's youngest billionaire had suddenly disappeared from public events.
Rumors exploded.
Business collapse.
Secret illness.
Political scandal.
No one guessed the truth.
Every morning Lucas drove four little girls to school.
Every afternoon he helped with homework.
Every evening they ate dinner together.
The mansion that once echoed with silence slowly filled with laughter.
Emma still watched every door.
Rose hid bread in her backpack.
Lily asked permission before taking seconds.
And Hannah refused to sleep unless Lucas checked beneath her bed for monsters.
One night she whispered,
"The monsters only come when adults leave."
Lucas kissed her forehead.
"Then they'll have to find another house."
She smiled before falling asleep.
It was the first peaceful smile anyone had seen from her.
But someone else had noticed the growing family.
And unlike Lucas...
She wasn't happy.
A woman named Veronica Hale.
Director of the Bennett Children's Foundation.
She had spent years building her reputation beside Lucas.
If he became the legal guardian of four abandoned girls, reporters might begin asking uncomfortable questions.

Especially about where millions in charity donations had actually gone.
And Veronica intended to stop that from happening.
