Veronica appeared at Lucas's office carrying concern on her face and calculation in her heart.
"Lucas," she began, "the board is worried."
"About what?"
"About your judgment."
He didn't answer.
She continued.
"Adopting four traumatized children could damage the company's image."
Lucas looked up slowly.
"I thought our image was helping children."
She hesitated.
"This is... different."
"No," Lucas replied quietly.
"This is real."
Suspicious of Veronica's sudden resistance, Lucas ordered an independent audit of every foundation account.
Within days the investigators discovered a hidden network of shell organizations.
Luxury vacations listed as humanitarian conferences.
Private jets labeled as emergency relief.
Millions of dollars that donors believed had fed hungry children had instead financed executive lifestyles.
Lucas felt sick.
He had spent years believing his foundation changed lives.
Instead, it had become another machine that rewarded wealthy people for pretending to care.
Veronica denied everything.
Then the documents surfaced.
Bank transfers.
Fake invoices.
Secret emails.
She resigned before criminal charges were filed.
The headlines shocked the country.

Journalists waited outside Lucas's home expecting another polished press conference.

Lucas walking four little girls to school.
Holding Hannah's backpack.
Laughing as Rose splashed through a puddle.
Helping Lily tie her scarf.
Listening while Emma proudly explained her math test.
Those photographs reached millions.
For once...
No one talked about his money.
They talked about his family.
Months later the adoption hearing arrived.
The courtroom was unusually crowded.
Teachers.
Neighbors.
Social workers.
Even Daniel sat quietly in the back row.
The judge looked over the reports.
"Mr. Bennett," she said, "every expert agrees these girls have experienced extraordinary trauma."
Lucas nodded.
"I know."
She smiled gently.
"And every expert also agrees that for the first time since losing their mother... they feel safe."
The judge closed the file.
"I cannot promise that every family succeeds."
She looked toward the sisters.
"But I believe this one already has."
She struck the gavel.
"The adoption is approved."
Hannah burst into tears.
Not frightened tears.
Happy ones.
Emma hugged Lucas so tightly he could barely breathe.
