Chapter 1: The Debt That Could Never Be Repaid

The ballroom remained frozen.

Victoria Langford struggled to pull her wrist free, but Emma refused to let go.

"Take your hands off me!" Victoria hissed.

Emma swallowed hard.

"I won't let you hit her."

The words were barely louder than a whisper.

Yet they echoed through the silent room.

For several long seconds, nobody moved.

Then a deep voice broke the silence.

"Release Miss Carter."

Every head turned.

A tall man stepped out from the shadows beside a marble pillar.

His tailored black suit was immaculate.

His expression revealed nothing.

But the room changed the instant people recognized him.

Vincent Moretti.

Conversations stopped.

Even the security guards instinctively stepped aside.

Victoria's confidence vanished.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," she stammered. "This waitress assaulted me."

Vincent didn't even look at her.

Instead, he walked directly toward the elderly woman.

"Mother."

Isabella smiled gently.

"I'm fine."

Vincent knelt beside her wheelchair.

"Were you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Then she pointed toward Emma.

"She protected me."

Only then did Vincent finally look at the young waitress.

Emma expected anger.

Dismissal.

Perhaps even blame for causing a scene.

Instead, Vincent asked one quiet question.

"What is your name?"

"Emma... Emma Carter."

He nodded slowly.

"I'll remember it."

Those four words sent a ripple through the ballroom.

Everyone in Chicago knew Vincent Moretti never forgot a name.

Especially one connected to a debt.

Turning toward Victoria, his voice became ice.

"My mother attends one charity event in three years."

"You attempted to strike her."

Victoria tried to laugh.

"It was only an argument."

"No."

Vincent stood.

"It was a mistake."

Within seconds, his head of security approached.

"Escort Miss Langford from the building."

Victoria gasped.

"You can't humiliate me like this! Do you know who I am?"

Vincent finally met her eyes.

"I know exactly who you were."

By the time the ballroom doors closed behind her, several guests had already begun quietly deleting her phone number from their contacts.

Emma, meanwhile, simply stared in disbelief.

She had no idea her life had just changed forever.
