Chapter 2: A Different Kind of Power

The next morning, Emma arrived at work expecting to be fired.
Instead, the hotel manager rushed toward her.
"Mr. Moretti wants to see you."
Her heart nearly stopped.
An hour later, she entered the executive office at Moretti Holdings.
Vincent stood beside a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Chicago.
"I investigated you," he said without turning.
Emma's stomach tightened.
"I'm sorry if I caused trouble."
"You didn't."
He placed a folder on the desk.
Inside were medical bills.
Hospital records.
Her father's treatment history.
Tuition invoices for her younger sister.
Emma's face turned pale.
"How did you..."
"I verify everyone connected to my family."
She lowered her eyes.
"I don't want charity."
Vincent looked at her carefully.
"I wasn't offering charity."
He slid another document across the desk.
A full-time position.
Executive Community Relations Director.
The salary was five times what she earned as a waitress.
"I've never worked in an office."
"I know."
"I don't have a degree."
"I know."
"I'm not qualified."
Vincent smiled faintly.
"My mother disagrees."
Later that afternoon, Isabella arrived carrying two cups of tea.
She took Emma's hand.
"Do you know why I asked Vincent to hire you?"
Emma shook her head.
"Because power teaches many people how to command."
She smiled warmly.
"But kindness cannot be taught."
Emma felt tears gather in her eyes.
For the first time in years...
Someone had seen her.
Not her uniform.
Not her poverty.
May you like
Her heart.
And that changed everything.
