Chapter 14 - Dante's Secret

Dante did not run.
That frightened Marcella more than if he had.
He entered the boardroom ten minutes later with an attorney.
His new wife Bianca was beside him.
Marcella appeared on the screen.
“Dante.”
He looked at her.
“Hello, Mother.”
Marcella stared as if she barely recognized him.
Nico placed the altered transfer on the table.
“Explain.”
Dante sat.
“I changed the memo.”
Marcella covered her mouth.
“Why?”
Dante looked toward Isabella.
“Because she deserves to fall.”
Isabella laughed from beside the investigators.
“So you framed me for murder.”
“I framed you for ordering something you would have ordered eventually.”
Nico slammed his palm against the table.
“That is not justice.”
Dante's eyes moved toward him.
“No?”
“My entire life, this family has survived by deciding what version of truth is useful.”
“I finally learned.”
Marcella's face collapsed.
“I taught you that?”
“Yes.”
The word cut deeply.
Dante continued.
“You stole money.”
“Grandmother drugged Uncle Nico.”
“Corrado killed Elena.”
“Sofia killed Grandfather.”
“And everybody called it protecting the family.”
“So I protected mine.”
Bianca lowered her eyes.
Nico stared.
“How does framing Isabella protect you?”
Dante smiled bitterly.
“Because the trust has another clause.”
Rafe frowned.
“What clause?”
“If Isabella is convicted of a violent felony connected to the trust, her succession rights transfer.”
“To whom?”
Dante looked at Marcella.
“Her eldest descendant.”
Marcella whispered.
“Me.”
Dante shook his head.
“No.”
“You waived your succession rights when you entered the cooperation agreement with investigators.”
Marcella stared.
Dante continued.
“So it passes to me.”
Nico felt disgust rise in him.
“You framed your grandmother for Elena's murder to inherit the company.”
Dante's voice rose.
“You keep acting like you're different.”
“I am.”
“Really?”
“You hit my mother tonight.”
Nico said nothing.
“You locked sixty people inside a ballroom.”
“You punched Corrado.”
“You built your entire reputation by making people afraid to cross you.”
Nico absorbed every accusation.
Dante leaned forward.
“The only difference between you and us is that Elena made you feel guilty about it.”
Nico stood.
“Maybe guilt is the difference.”
Dante's smile vanished.
Nico continued.
“Because guilt means I can still recognize when I've become someone I hate.”
“You?”
“You manipulated a murder investigation for shares.”
Dante looked away.
Bianca began crying.
“I told him not to.”
Marcella looked at her daughter-in-law.
“You knew?”
Bianca nodded.
“I found the file the morning of the wedding.”
“I begged him to delete it.”
Dante glared at her.
“You promised.”
Bianca turned on him.
“I promised before your mother hit a child and your family started confessing to crimes between champagne courses.”
Despite everything, Rafe almost laughed.
Dante stood.
“This family was going to lose everything.”
Nico stared.
“No.”
“You were going to lose everything.”
Dante's composure cracked.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Build something.”
“With what?”
“Your own hands.”
Dante laughed.
“Easy for a billionaire to say.”
Nico nodded.
“Yes.”
“That is why I'm surrendering my claim.”
Everyone went silent.
Marcella stared through the screen.
“What?”
Nico looked toward the board.
“I will not claim Salvatore's controlling shares.”
“Vivia's trust will remain under independent fiduciary management.”
“No Bellandi family member controls it.”
Isabella looked horrified.
“You cannot do that.”
“I just did.”
Dante stared.
“You would give control to strangers?”
“Professionals.”
“Who can be audited.”
“Who can be removed.”
“Who don't call corruption family loyalty.”
Marcella began crying quietly.
Nico looked at Dante.
“You committed fraud.”
“You answer for it.”
“But you do not get an empire as a reward.”
Investigators approached Dante.
Bianca stepped away from him.
He looked at Marcella.
“Do something.”
Marcella stared at her son.
For years she had cleaned his mistakes.
Paid his debts.
Threatened teachers.
Bought silence.
Opened doors.
Removed consequences.
Now she slowly shook her head.
“No.”
Dante looked stunned.
“Mother.”
“I love you.”
“Then help me.”
“That is what I thought helping meant.”
Marcella wiped tears from her face.
“It ruined you.”
Dante was escorted away.
His wedding had lasted less than twenty-four hours.
His marriage might not survive the second day.
The Bellandi empire was under external control.
And Isabella remained under investigation.
Nico thought the worst truths had finally surfaced.
Then Vivia entered the boardroom holding Elena's dress.
Nico immediately went to her.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“Uncle Luca brought me.”
Luca appeared behind her.
His face was serious.
Vivia handed Nico another pearl.
“This one made noise.”
Nico frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“I shook the dress.”
Rafe examined the pearl.
It contained another tiny storage chip.
Nico looked at Luca.
“Elena hid more than one.”
Luca nodded.
They connected the chip.
One video appeared.
Date stamped four days before Elena died.
Elena sat inside the secret apartment.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Nico.”
“If you found the second pearl, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.”
Nico watched.
“This file is not about Marcella.”
“Not Corrado.”
“Not Sofia.”
“Not Isabella.”
Elena took a breath.
“This file is about the person who has been helping me.”
Rafe went still.
Nico slowly looked at him.
On the screen, Elena continued.
“Rafe lied to me.”
Nico stared at his oldest friend.
May you like
Elena's voice became quieter.
“And I think I know why.”
