Chapter 19 - Elena's Final Secret

The veil had been missing for eleven months.
Nico remembered seeing it after Elena's funeral.
It had been folded inside the same cedar chest as the dress.
Then it disappeared.
Marcella thought Corrado had taken it.
Corrado denied ever seeing it.
Vivia provided the answer.
“Mommy gave it to Grandma.”
Nico looked at her.
“Which grandma?”
“Daddy's mommy.”
Isabella.
Nico went to San Luca.
His mother did not deny it.
“Elena gave me the veil the morning of the crash.”
“Why?”
“She said if anything happened to her, I should destroy it.”
Nico stared.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Where is it?”
Isabella smiled sadly.
“Perhaps some part of me wanted the truth to survive.”
She led him to her bedroom.
Behind a wardrobe was a narrow safe.
Inside lay Elena's veil.
Nico touched it gently.
Unlike the dress, it contained no obvious hidden seams.
Vivia examined it.
“Stars.”
Tiny silver stars were embroidered along the edge.
Luca had said Elena's mother always used twelve stars.
Nico counted.
Twelve.
One star looked darker.
He pressed it.
A tiny strip of paper emerged.
Not digital evidence.
Not money.
A simple handwritten note.
Nico unfolded it.
Nico, if you find this after exposing the council, then please stop looking for enemies.
He froze.
There will always be another person who lied.
Another person who failed.
Another account.
Another secret.
If you spend Vivia's childhood hunting every shadow, the council will still have taken you from her.
Nico's eyes filled with tears.
He kept reading.
The evidence you need is enough.
The rest belongs to prosecutors.
Your job is not revenge.
Your job is our daughter.
Nico sat on Isabella's bed.
Vivia climbed beside him.
“Mommy wrote that?”
“Yes.”
“What does it say?”
Nico looked at her.
“It says I'm supposed to stop being stupid.”
Vivia laughed.
Isabella smiled from the doorway.
Nico looked toward his mother.
The smile disappeared.
“You knew what it said?”
“No.”
“Why not open it?”
“Because Elena asked me to destroy it.”
Nico frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
Isabella looked down.
“I was afraid it would contain proof against me.”
Nico almost smiled.
“At least you're consistent.”
Isabella accepted the insult.
The criminal investigation unfolded over the next three months.
Corrado eventually confessed to sabotaging Elena's car.
He did so after investigators found the mechanic.
The mechanic had kept copies of every payment.
Sofia was charged with conspiracy, bribery, obstruction, and responsibility for multiple financial crimes.
Teresa pleaded guilty to kidnapping and unlawful interference with an investigation.
Her cooperation significantly reduced her sentence.
Dante was charged with evidence tampering and fraud.
Bianca filed for annulment.
Dr. Serrano surrendered his medical license and cooperated fully.
Isabella faced charges related to financial concealment, fraudulent medical documentation, and illegal sedation.
Nico visited her once before trial.
They sat across from each other in a quiet interview room.
Isabella looked smaller without the Bellandi estate around her.
“You look tired.”
Nico smiled faintly.
“You sound like my mother.”
“I am your mother.”
“I'm still deciding what that means.”
She nodded.
“Fair.”
Isabella looked at him.
“How is Vivia?”
“Better.”
“Does she ask about me?”
“Yes.”
“What do you tell her?”
“That you made serious mistakes.”
“And?”
“That you love her.”
Isabella began crying.
“You believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Love doesn't make the mistakes disappear.”
“No.”
“But the mistakes don't automatically make the love fake either.”
Isabella wiped her eyes.
“You sound like Elena.”
“People keep saying that.”
“It's a compliment.”
“I know.”
Nico stood.
His mother grabbed his hand.
“Did Elena leave anything else?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Permission to stop.”
Isabella smiled through tears.
“Take it.”
Nico left.
Bellandi Industries survived.
But it changed.
The family name was removed from several foundations.
Independent directors took control.
Every trust was audited.
Employees whose jobs depended on legitimate business remained protected.
Fraudulent divisions were dissolved.
Nico refused the chairman position.
Instead, he built a smaller company using his own capital.
No inherited shares.
No council.
No secret partners.
Rafe became his security adviser only after making peace with Matteo's mother and beginning the painful process of telling the boy the truth.
Marcella entered a cooperation agreement.
She sold nearly everything she owned to repay stolen funds.
The lake house disappeared first.
Then the apartments.
Then the jewelry.
She moved into a modest townhouse.
For the first time in decades, she had no driver.
No assistant.
No staff.
And no power to force forgiveness.
Vivia refused to see her for four months.
Marcella accepted it.
Then one afternoon, Vivia asked Nico.
“Can Aunt Marcella come to my birthday?”
Nico looked surprised.
“Do you want her there?”
Vivia thought carefully.
“She did a bad thing.”
“More than one.”
“Mommy said people are more than their worst day.”
Nico closed his eyes.
“Your mother really left me no room to be dramatic.”
Vivia smiled.
“No.”
Marcella came.
She brought no expensive gift.
Only a repaired version of Elena's old dress.
Every torn seam had been carefully restored.
The pearls remained open where the evidence had been hidden.
Marcella knelt in front of Vivia.
“I thought about replacing them.”
Vivia touched the empty pearl shells.
“Why didn't you?”
“Because hiding the damage would be another lie.”
Vivia looked at her for a long time.
Then she hugged Marcella.
Marcella completely broke down.
Nico watched from the doorway.
He did not interfere.
Later that evening, Camilla arrived.
She and Nico had not resumed their engagement.
They had not even resumed dating.
Some relationships required more than love to survive.
But she remained part of Vivia's life.
Camilla handed Nico a package.
“My father found this.”
Nico frowned.
“Where?”
“In Elena's apartment.”
“Another secret?”
Camilla smiled faintly.
“Hopefully a better one.”
Inside was an undeveloped disposable camera.
Nico almost laughed.
“Elena hated these.”
“Apparently she used one.”
They developed the photographs.
Most showed ordinary moments.
Vivia covered in flour.
Rafe asleep on the sofa.
Nico fixing a bicycle badly.
Elena laughing.
Nothing criminal.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing dangerous.
Then they reached the final photograph.
Elena stood in front of a mirror wearing the old wedding dress.
She was holding a sign.
IF NICO EVER FINDS THIS, TELL HIM HE STILL OWES ME A HONEYMOON IN PARIS.
Nico laughed and cried at the same time.
Vivia climbed onto his lap.
“Were you supposed to take Mommy to Paris?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Vivia looked offended.
“Daddy.”
“I know.”
“That was rude.”
Camilla laughed.
Nico wiped his eyes.
Then Vivia said something that silenced everyone.
“We can take her.”
Nico looked at her.
“What?”
Vivia pointed toward Elena's photograph.
“Not Mommy.”
“The dress.”
“We can take the dress to Paris.”
Nico stared at his daughter.
Then he smiled.
“I think she'd like that.”
Vivia nodded seriously.
“She'd probably complain about the airplane.”
Nico laughed again.
The following spring, Nico and Vivia stood beside the Seine.
The old dress remained safely packed inside a garment case.
They carried Elena's photograph.
The city glowed behind them.
For the first time since Elena's death, Nico did not feel as though he were chasing her.
He felt as though he had finally reached the place she wanted him to be.
Beside their daughter.
Alive.
Present.
Free.
Then his phone rang.
Nico considered ignoring it.
Vivia looked at him.
“Answer.”
He smiled.
“Yes, boss.”
He answered.
Rafe spoke.
“Nico.”
Something in his voice changed everything.
“What happened?”
“We received the final forensic report on Elena's car.”
Nico's smile disappeared.
“I thought Corrado confessed.”
“He did.”
“Then what?”
Rafe became quiet.
“The brake line wasn't the only thing altered.”
Nico stared across the river.
“What else?”
“The passenger airbag was disabled.”
Nico frowned.
“Elena was alone.”
Rafe answered.
“No.”
Nico stopped breathing.
“We found blood beneath the passenger seat.”
“Female.”
“Not Elena's.”
Nico looked toward the photograph of his wife.
Rafe continued.
“And Nico?”
“Yes?”
“The DNA belongs to someone we already know.”
Nico's grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?”
May you like
Rafe answered.
“Marcella.”
