CHAPTER 2 — THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The knock on the front door came less than an hour after I carried Lily and our daughter upstairs.

Lily had barely finished feeding the baby when a woman wearing a county identification badge stepped inside.

"I'm Sarah Mitchell," she said calmly. "I'm the family support social worker assigned after your daughter's birth."

Lily's face turned pale.

"She came last week," Lily whispered.

Sarah nodded.

"I did."

She looked around the living room before asking one question.

"May I see where the baby has been sleeping?"

Vanessa answered before anyone else.

"They've been using the guest room."

"No," Lily said quietly.

"The basement."

Sarah frowned.

"The basement?"

Without another word, she followed us downstairs.

The room still smelled damp.

An old mattress lay in the corner.

A broken space heater sat beside it.

There were no smoke detectors.

No crib.

No changing table.

Only a cardboard box filled with baby clothes.

Sarah stopped speaking.

She slowly pulled out her phone and photographed everything.

Then she noticed something else.

The baby formula.

It was nearly full.

"How often is the baby eating?" she asked.

Lily lowered her eyes.

"Whenever Vanessa allows me to come upstairs."

The room became completely silent.

Sarah examined Lily's arms.

The bruises had fingerprints.

Fresh ones.

Old ones.

Some already turning yellow.

"Who did this?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"She's clumsy."

Sarah didn't respond.

Instead, she walked outside.

Standing beside her car, she made a phone call.

"My name is Sarah Mitchell," she said.

"I need officers and Child Protective Services immediately."

"This is not neglect."

"This appears to be intentional coercive abuse."

Vanessa laughed from the porch.

"You can't prove anything."

Sarah looked directly at her.

May you like

"I don't have to."

"You already proved it yourself."
