CHAPTER 3 — THE LIES COLLAPSE

Two detectives arrived within thirty minutes.

Vanessa remained strangely confident.

"She's mentally unstable after childbirth," she explained smoothly.

"I only moved them downstairs because Lily was paranoid and kept waking the baby."

The story sounded convincing.

Until Detective Brooks asked for everyone's phones.

Vanessa hesitated.

Only for two seconds.

It was enough.

A search warrant was approved that same afternoon.

What investigators discovered shocked even them.

Vanessa had deleted dozens of messages from Lily's phone.

Including the one that read:

"I don't think we're safe."

Phone records showed the deleted message had never disappeared from the carrier's servers.

There were voice recordings.

Photos.

Even internet searches.

"Can someone lose custody because of postpartum depression?"

"How to become emergency guardian of a relative's baby."

"Property rights after incapacitated sibling."

Then came the worst discovery.

Vanessa had been secretly texting a real estate agent.

"If Mason doesn't recover quickly, I may need to sell his property."

She wasn't protecting our family.

She had been preparing to replace it.

When confronted, Vanessa finally lost her composure.

"I deserved that house!"

"I took care of Mom and Dad!"

"Mason abandoned us!"

Detective Brooks remained expressionless.

"So your solution was imprisoning his wife and newborn?"

Vanessa said nothing.

The handcuffs clicked shut.

Her career as a licensed family counselor ended before sunset.

The irony wasn't lost on anyone.

The woman who claimed to protect vulnerable families had become the person they needed protection from.
