Chapter 2: Every Camera Was Already Watching

No one moved.
The reinforced steel barriers sealed every exit with a final metallic thud that echoed through the ballroom.
Panic spread almost instantly.
Guests rushed toward the doors, pounding against solid steel.
"It's locked!"
"Call security!"
"My phone has no signal!"
The orchestra had stopped playing.
Crystal chandeliers continued to sparkle overhead as though nothing had changed.
Only one person remained perfectly calm.
Me.
Across the ballroom, Damian Blackwood—the man who had shoved me into the marble wall minutes earlier—took one uncertain step backward.
"You've lost your mind."
I smiled faintly.
"No."
"I finally stopped pretending."
The ballroom's giant LED screen flickered to life.
Instead of the charity foundation's logo, security footage appeared.
There I was.
Walking toward Damian.
Trying to leave the conversation peacefully.
Then came the shove.
My back slammed into the marble column.
The impact echoed through the silent ballroom.
A collective gasp filled the room.
"It was recorded?" someone whispered.
Every security camera inside the estate had captured the assault from multiple angles.
Damian turned pale.
"You edited that."
"I didn't have to."
A second video began.
His friends laughing.
One of them encouraging him.
Another preventing a waiter from stepping in to help.
The room grew quieter with every second.
Several board members slowly lowered their champagne glasses.
They had witnessed everything.
They had simply chosen not to act.
The front doors remained locked as a line of black-suited security officers entered the ballroom.
They didn't point weapons.
They didn't shout.
They calmly positioned themselves beside every exit.
Then my father walked through the center aisle.
Arthur Bennett.
Founder of the Bennett Group.
Owner of the estate.
The room parted without a word.
Damian stared at him in disbelief.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"This is your daughter?"
My father looked first at the bruise beneath my eye.
Then at the torn sleeve of my evening gown.
Finally, he met Damian's eyes.
"You had every opportunity to walk away."
His voice remained calm.
May you like
"You chose violence instead."
The silence that followed was far more frightening than any raised voice.
