Chapter 3: The Guests Who Chose Silence

No one left the ballroom.
Not because they couldn't.
Because investigators had already arrived.
Local police officers entered alongside detectives from the financial crimes unit.
One detective addressed the crowd.
"No one here is under arrest simply for attending this event."
He paused.
"But anyone who witnessed a violent assault may be asked to provide a statement."
The atmosphere changed immediately.
People who had laughed only minutes earlier suddenly avoided eye contact.
A woman quietly admitted she had recorded the incident on her phone.
Another guest revealed Damian had threatened a photographer before the gala.
A waiter stepped forward.
"I tried to help her."
He glanced toward Damian.
"Your friends blocked my way."
Then another witness spoke.
And another.
Each statement fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators collected fingerprints from the shattered champagne glass and photographed the damaged marble column where my shoulder had struck.
The evidence spoke more clearly than anger ever could.
Damian finally exploded.
"This is ridiculous!"
"It was one push!"
My father looked at him without emotion.
"One push can end a life."
The detective nodded.
"Which is exactly why we're investigating."
Across the ballroom, Damian's father slowly removed the family signet ring from his finger.
He looked at his son with exhausted disappointment.
"I spent thirty years building our name."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"You nearly destroyed it in thirty seconds."

For the first time that night...
Damian realized no one was coming to rescue him.
