CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH COMES OUT
Emily forced a smile.
"Michael... you're overreacting."
"I was only teaching Sophie responsibility."
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he knelt and gently rolled up the sleeve of Sophie's tiny arm.
His heart nearly stopped.
There were fresh bruises around her wrist.
Not large enough to attract attention.
But impossible to ignore.
His hands trembled.
"Who did this?"
Sophie lowered her eyes.
"I... I fell."
Emily quickly nodded.
"Exactly! Kids fall all the time."
Michael looked at his daughter.
Then quietly asked,
"Sweetheart... look at me."
She slowly raised her tear-filled eyes.
"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."
For several long seconds...
She said nothing.
Then her lip quivered.
"Emily grabbed me..."
"...because I spilled juice."
Silence.
Michael slowly turned toward his wife.
Emily's confident expression disappeared.
"She's lying!" Emily shouted.
"She's just trying to make me look bad!"
Michael walked to the kitchen counter.
There sat the home's security monitor.
He opened the recording system.
Emily's breathing became uneven.
"Michael... don't."
The footage began to play.
Hour after hour...
It showed Sophie cleaning floors...
washing dishes...
carrying heavy laundry baskets...
while Emily relaxed, watched television, met friends, and ignored the little girl's tears.
Then came the moment that shattered every excuse.
Sophie accidentally dropped a glass.
Emily stormed across the room...
grabbed the little girl's arm...
and forced her back onto the floor.
"You don't eat until this house is spotless."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Michael quietly turned off the screen.
Then he looked at Emily one last time.
"You didn't marry me because you loved us."
"You married my family."
Emily's face went pale.
He picked up his phone.
"James."
His lawyer answered immediately.
"I want divorce papers prepared tonight."
"And file for an emergency protection order for my daughter."
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
"Michael... please..."
