CHAPTER 4 — A PROMISE KEPT

Six months later...

The Carter mansion felt alive again.

Laughter echoed through every hallway.

Color had returned.

So had hope.

Sophie no longer woke up crying in the middle of the night.

She smiled again.

She painted again.

She laughed at cartoons again.

One Saturday morning...

Michael handed her the same pink gift box that had fallen to the floor the day he came home.

"I think it's finally time."

Sophie slowly opened it.

Inside was a beautiful silver necklace shaped like a tiny heart.

She threw her arms around her father.

"I love it!"

Michael smiled.

"But that's not the real gift."

He handed her another envelope.

Inside were adoption papers.

Not for Sophie...

But for Linda.

The elderly housekeeper who had secretly comforted Sophie, slipped her snacks when she was hungry, and protected her whenever she could.

Michael looked at Linda.

"You've loved Sophie like family."

"We already are family."

Tears streamed down Linda's face.

Sophie hugged both of them.

For the first time in months...

She finally felt safe.

Outside the courthouse weeks later...

Emily watched from a distance.

She had lost the divorce.

She had lost every legal appeal.

She had lost the luxurious life she had chased.

But the greatest loss wasn't the mansion...

Or the money.

It was realizing too late that kindness cannot be faked, and a child's trust—once broken—is almost impossible to earn back.

As Michael took Sophie's hand and they walked toward a brighter future together, she looked up at him with a smile brighter than the morning sun.

"Daddy..."

"You came back."

Michael squeezed her little hand.

"I always will."

And this time...

May you like

He made sure it was a promise he would never break.

THE END
