Chapter 1 - THE FIRST WITNESS

Claire slowly lifted her head and looked at Graham.

“No physical therapist told Evelyn that.”

Her voice was calm.

The words still cut through the ballroom like a blade.

Graham’s expression changed for less than a second.

It was only a flicker.

A tightening around his mouth.

A quick movement in his eyes.

Then the polished mask returned.

“You weren’t at her appointment,” he said.

Claire rose from her knees but remained beside Evelyn.

“I drove her there.”

A murmur moved through the guests.

Graham looked toward Margaret and Daniel as though expecting them to stop Claire.

Neither of them spoke.

Claire continued.

“Dr. Walsh told Evelyn she could practice standing for short periods with someone she trusted nearby.”

Graham’s gaze dropped toward Evelyn.

“She misunderstood him.”

“No,” Claire said.

“She didn’t.”

The distant sound of emergency sirens began to rise from the street below.

Graham glanced toward the open ballroom doors.

Luis Ortega noticed.

“Sir, remain where you are.”

“I am not a criminal.”

“No one called you one.”

“Then stop treating me like one.”

Ortega’s expression did not change.

“We are protecting an injured guest and preserving the scene.”

Graham gave a short, humorless laugh.

“The scene?”

His eyes moved toward the broken glass and spilled wine.

“My fiancée fell.”

Margaret stepped away from Daniel.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Her bouquet slipped from her fingers and landed silently on the marble.

“She did not fall.”

Graham stared at her.

Margaret’s face had gone pale, but her voice remained steady.

“I saw your hand against the back of her chair.”

“You saw me trying to help her.”

“I saw you lean down and say something to her.”

“I was speaking privately to the woman I am going to marry.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with something colder than anger.

“Then you will not mind telling us what you said.”

Graham looked around the ballroom.

The guests were no longer whispering.

They were listening.

Evelyn could feel Claire’s hand resting lightly against her shoulder.

The phone hidden in Claire’s dress continued recording.

Graham did not know that.

He took a slow breath.

“I asked Evelyn to sign a routine document.”

The folded paper remained in his hand.

Daniel Hartwell finally moved.

He crossed the marble floor and stopped directly in front of Graham.

“What document?”

Graham hesitated.

That hesitation changed everything.

Daniel extended his hand.

“Give it to me.”

“It concerns Evelyn and me.”

“My daughter is lying on the floor.”

“And she is perfectly capable of making her own decisions.”

“Then why were you pressuring her to sign it?”

“I was not pressuring her.”

Evelyn found her voice.

“He threatened me.”

The words were weak.

They were still loud enough.

Graham turned toward her.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his face.

Evelyn looked directly at him.

“He said if I did not sign, he would prove I was mentally unfit.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

Graham shook his head.

“She’s confused.”

Evelyn’s fingers pressed into the marble.

“No.”

Her voice grew stronger.

“I remember every word.”

The paramedics entered through the glass doors.

Claire stepped aside just enough to let them reach Evelyn.

As they began examining her, Graham moved toward the exit.

Ortega blocked him again.

“You cannot hold me here.”

“I can ask you to remain until the police arrive.”

“The police?”

Margaret looked at the man she had once planned to welcome into her family.

“Yes,” she said.

“The police.”

Graham stared at Evelyn as the paramedics carefully lifted her onto a medical board.

His voice dropped until it was almost a whisper.

“You have no idea what you just started.”

Evelyn met his eyes.

The red recording light remained hidden beneath Claire’s hand.

May you like

“Yes,” she said.

“I do.”
