Chapter 12 - THE EMPTY PENTHOUSE

The transfer led investigators back to Manhattan.

Martin Keene had never left the city.

He had been hiding inside an unfinished luxury tower owned by Mercer Development.

The building stood twelve blocks from Hartwell Tower.

Graham had designed a private residence across the top three floors.

No official plans showed the apartment.

Federal agents entered the building shortly before midnight.

They found Martin alone.

Graham was not there.

Martin surrendered immediately.

Within an hour, he offered information in exchange for protection.

He admitted helping Graham hide the debt inside Mercer Development.

He admitted paying Owen Pike.

He admitted creating the shell companies.

He also claimed Graham had kept evidence inside Evelyn’s penthouse.

A search warrant was approved before dawn.

Evelyn asked to enter with investigators.

Claire objected.

Daniel refused.

Margaret threatened to lock the elevator.

Evelyn went anyway.

The penthouse looked exactly as she had left it.

Fresh flowers stood in the foyer.

Her coat remained over the back of a chair.

A cup rested beside the library sofa.

For one painful moment, it felt like Graham might walk out of the bedroom and ask why she had been gone so long.

Investigators searched his office first.

They found nothing.

The computers had been wiped.

The filing cabinets were empty.

The safe contained only jewelry and cash.

Then Evelyn noticed a difference in the therapy room.

One section of the wooden wall appeared slightly darker.

She rolled closer.

The wall panel opened when she pressed the edge.

Behind it was a narrow steel door.

Investigators forced the lock.

Inside the hidden compartment stood shelves of files.

Every file carried a name.

Daniel Hartwell.

Margaret Hartwell.

Claire Brennan.

Peter Hartwell.

Thomas Bell.

Evelyn Hartwell.

Her file filled three shelves.

It contained medical records, photographs, copied emails, legal drafts, and handwritten observations.

Graham had documented her moods.

Her sleeping patterns.

Her arguments with her parents.

Her fears after the crash.

He wrote down phrases he could use to calm her.

He wrote down phrases that made her doubt herself.

One page was titled Steps Toward Dependency.

Evelyn read the list.

Control medication.

Limit unsupervised therapy.

Separate from family.

Question memory.

Create public incidents.

Establish medical authority.

Transfer voting control.

Marriage.

The final word had been underlined twice.

Claire stood beside her.

“This was never an engagement.”

“No.”

Evelyn closed the folder.

“It was an acquisition.”

An investigator called from the bedroom.

They found a second phone hidden beneath the floor of Graham’s closet.

The phone contained messages between Graham and Martin.

One message was dated the night of the crash.

EVELYN LEFT THE HOTEL.

Another arrived eleven minutes later.

CONNECTION ACTIVE.

Then Graham sent three words.

DO IT NOW.

The next message came after the collision.

SHE IS ALIVE.

Martin answered.

THAT COMPLICATES THINGS.

Evelyn read the exchange without blinking.

The investigators photographed the screen.

Claire turned away.

Even the federal agent holding the phone looked sickened.

Another message had been sent six months later.

Graham wrote that Evelyn’s recovery was progressing too quickly.

Martin asked whether another accident was necessary.

Graham replied.

NOT YET.

The words remained on the screen.

Not yet.

Evelyn looked around the bedroom where she had slept beside him.

Every night, Graham had been waiting for the moment when hurting her again might become useful.

A sound came from the hallway.

Security officers moved instantly.

The apartment door had opened.

Luis Ortega entered with his hand near his weapon.

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?” Claire asked.

“Mrs. Hartwell is missing.”

Evelyn’s heart stopped.

“My mother?”

“She left Hartwell House twenty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“Someone called and told her Graham was at the lake house.”

Evelyn looked at Graham’s second phone.
