Chapter 11 - THE FOUNDATION GALA

The Hawthorne Foundation’s annual gala was scheduled for Saturday evening.
Eleanor refused to cancel it.
She intended to prove that the family remained powerful despite the investigation.
Hundreds of donors gathered at the Metropolitan Grand Hotel.
Television cameras lined the entrance.
Eleanor arrived in a white gown.
She smiled as reporters shouted questions about Vanessa.
“My daughter will return when the truth is known,” she said.
Emma watched from a surveillance van across the street.
Detective Ruiz believed Vanessa might contact Eleanor during the gala.
Emma had another reason for attending.
The foundation’s board planned to vote on destroying old financial files.
Eleanor called it routine document disposal.
Emma knew it was evidence destruction.
She entered the ballroom beside Ethan.
Conversation stopped.
Eleanor’s smile vanished.
“You were not invited,” she said.
“I’m still your daughter-in-law.”
“Not for long.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“Emma has every right to be here.”
Eleanor looked at her son with open contempt.
“You chose her over your own blood.”
“No.”
Ethan’s voice remained steady.
“I chose the truth.”
The board meeting began in a private room above the ballroom.
Emma presented the bank transfers, Owen’s original audit, and Robert Hawthorne’s recording.
Several board members demanded Eleanor’s resignation.
Others called their attorneys.
Eleanor remained silent until the video ended.
Then she laughed.
“A frightened man recorded a lie while drunk.”
Ethan leaned across the table.
“Father did not drink.”
“He had many secrets you never understood.”
The lights suddenly went out.
Guests screamed inside the ballroom.
Emergency alarms began ringing.
Ruiz shouted through Emma’s earpiece.
“Stay where you are.”
A woman in a catering uniform entered through the service door.
She pulled off her wig.
Vanessa stood beneath it.
Before Emma could move, Vanessa pressed a small blade against her back.
“Walk,” she whispered.
Emma felt her daughter kick.
Vanessa guided her into the dark corridor.
“You should have died on that staircase.”
Police rushed through the ballroom below.
Vanessa opened a maintenance door.
A narrow stairwell disappeared into darkness.

Emma looked down.
Then Vanessa shoved her toward the edge.
