Chapter 16 - THE LAST HAWTHORNE DINNER

Emma’s daughter remained in the neonatal intensive care unit for four weeks.
Emma named her Grace Lawson Hawthorne.
Lawson came before Hawthorne on the birth certificate.
Ethan did not object.
He visited Grace every morning.
He sat beside the incubator and read children’s stories in a quiet voice.
Emma watched him through the glass.
She still loved him.
Love, however, was not the same as trust.
One evening, Ethan asked her to attend a final family meeting.
The remaining Hawthorne relatives had gathered at the mansion to discuss the foundation’s future.
Emma agreed on one condition.
Detective Ruiz would be present.
The dining room looked exactly as it had before the birthday dinner.
The same silver candles burned on the table.
The same portraits watched from the walls.
Thomas’s wife, two cousins, and several board members sat in silence.
Ethan stood at the head of the table.
“The Hawthorne Foundation is being dissolved,” he announced.
Gasps moved through the room.
“All remaining assets will be transferred into an independent restitution fund.”
One cousin struck the table.
“You cannot erase one hundred years of family history.”
Ethan looked toward Emma.
“Our history was written with stolen money and buried bodies.”
Emma presented the final audit.
The foundation owed more than eighty million dollars to charities, former employees, and families harmed by Eleanor’s crimes.
The mansion would be sold.
The private art collection would be auctioned.
Ethan had already surrendered his controlling shares.
His relatives stared at him with hatred.
“You are giving away our inheritance,” his aunt said.
“It was never ours.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Maria entered carrying a small wooden box.
“This belonged to Mr. Lawson,” she said.
Inside was a letter Owen had written to Emma before his arrest.
Maria had found it behind a loose wall in the guesthouse.
Emma unfolded the paper.
My dearest Emma, it began.
One day, people may tell you that your father was dishonest.
Do not waste your life proving your worth to those who profit from lies.
Tell the truth once.
Then walk away free.
Emma pressed the letter against her heart.
A police officer entered the dining room.
He whispered something to Ruiz.
She looked toward Emma.
“Vanessa escaped from the hospital.”
The guard outside her room had been found unconscious.

Vanessa had left behind only one message.
DINNER IS NOT OVER.
