Chapter 1 — The Mother Who Never Stopped Waiting

The ballroom stood perfectly still.
The orchestra had lowered their instruments.
Even the champagne fountains seemed silent.
Helen held the little boy tightly against her chest, gently rocking him until his sobs became quiet hiccups.
"I'm here," she whispered.
"I've got you."
Tony couldn't move.
Twenty years.
Twenty years believing his mother had abandoned him.
Twenty years of birthdays without her.
Twenty years of anger built on a lie.
He slowly stepped forward.
"Helen..."
His voice cracked.
"I buried you."
Helen finally looked at him.
Tears rolled down her weathered face.
"They buried my name."
The bride, Olivia, stared between them in confusion.
"What is happening?"
Tony never looked away from Helen.
"She's my mother."
Gasps rippled through the ballroom.
"My father said she disappeared after taking money from the family."
Helen slowly reached into the pocket of her maid's apron.
She removed a worn leather envelope tied with faded blue ribbon.
Inside were twenty birthday cards.
Twenty unopened letters.
Every one addressed to Tony.
"I wrote to you every year," she whispered.
"They were all returned."
At that moment, an elderly gentleman quietly stood from the family table.
Arthur Whitmore.
Tony's grandfather.
May you like
His hands trembled.
He knew exactly where those letters had gone.
