Chapter 2 — The Truth Hidden Behind Wealth

Arthur closed his eyes.
"I owe everyone here the truth."
The ballroom became silent once again.
"When my son died..."
"...I blamed Helen."
He looked toward her.
"You came from nothing."
"I believed you weren't worthy of our family."
Helen lowered her eyes.
"I begged you to let me raise my son."
Arthur nodded slowly.
"I know."
"I refused."
He admitted everything.
He had paid lawyers.
Used his influence.
Intercepted every letter.
Changed addresses.
Told Tony his mother had abandoned him.
Then he offered Helen one condition.
Leave quietly...
Or lose every chance of ever seeing her child again.
Helen accepted the only job she could find.
Housekeeping.
Ironically...
It was inside the very hotel where Tony would eventually build his career.
She watched him grow from a distance.
She cleaned banquet halls after his business events.
She celebrated every newspaper article alone.
She stood in the shadows because one glimpse of her son was better than never seeing him at all.
Tony could barely breathe.
"You were here..."
Helen nodded.
"Always."
"I watched every birthday banquet your company held."
"I watched every promotion."
"I watched your wedding rehearsal yesterday."
"I just wanted to know you were happy."
Tony fell to his knees.

For the first time since he was a little boy...
He cried in his mother's arms.
