Chapter 1 - THE SECRET THAT BROKE A MARRIAGEFor six weeks, Nathan Cole had lived inside a lie he was too frightened to question.

Vanessa Reed was pregnant.

At least, that was what she had told him.

She had stood beneath the crystal chandelier in Nathan’s family mansion, one hand resting protectively on her stomach, and announced that she was carrying his child.

Nathan’s wife, Caroline, had been standing only ten feet away.

The color had drained from Caroline’s face.

No one spoke.

Even the string quartet hired for the anniversary dinner stopped playing.

Nathan had wanted to deny everything.

But the guilt in his eyes had already confessed for him.

He had made one terrible mistake during a business trip to Los Angeles.

One night.

One decision.

One secret he had convinced himself would never follow him home.

Vanessa had waited until Nathan and Caroline’s tenth wedding anniversary to reveal the supposed pregnancy.

She claimed she had done it because she could no longer hide the truth.

Caroline did not scream.

She did not throw a glass or demand an explanation.

She simply removed her wedding ring, placed it on the table beside Nathan’s untouched champagne, and walked away.

Within three days, she moved out of the mansion.

Within a week, her attorney filed for legal separation.

Nathan’s company began losing investors after the scandal leaked to the press.

Vanessa moved into the guest wing of the mansion, claiming that stress could endanger the baby.

She demanded private nurses, expensive vitamins, and complete control over Nathan’s schedule.

Nathan obeyed every request.

He believed he deserved the punishment.

Only Ethan Cole, Nathan’s younger brother, refused to accept the situation without questions.

Ethan had always been the quiet one in the family.

He watched before he spoke.

He remembered details other people ignored.

And every time he saw Vanessa, something troubled him.

Her pregnancy never seemed to change.

Not even a little.

At six weeks, her stomach had been round and firm.

At ten weeks, it looked exactly the same.

At fourteen weeks, it still had the identical shape.

Ethan began comparing photographs from family dinners and charity events.

The curve did not grow.

It did not lower.

It did not shift.

It was as if Vanessa’s body had been frozen in time.

When Ethan raised the subject with Nathan, his brother became angry.

“You think I haven’t caused enough damage already?” Nathan asked.

“I’m saying something doesn’t feel right,” Ethan replied.

“She’s carrying my child.”

“You only know what she told you.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“What are you accusing her of?”

Ethan looked toward the staircase where Vanessa had disappeared moments earlier.

“I don’t know yet.”

Then something silver caught the light near the leg of the sofa.

Ethan bent down and picked it up.

It was a tiny fastening pin.

Its sharp point was covered with a drop of beige silicone.

And in that moment, Ethan finally understood what he had been looking at.

Vanessa’s pregnancy had never changed because it had never been real.
