Chapter 12 - WHEN THE BELLY MOVEDVanessa suddenly cried out.

She bent forward and grabbed a table for support.

The guests gasped.

Nathan started toward her.

Ethan stopped him.

“Watch carefully.”

Vanessa pretended to struggle for breath.

She moved toward the side of the stage.

Her dress brushed against a floral display.

The hidden fastening pin caught on a thin decorative wire.

Vanessa pulled away.

The pin remained trapped.

A faint tearing sound passed through the silent ballroom.

The support band beneath her dress loosened.

The artificial belly shifted several inches to the left.

At first, only Ethan noticed.

Then Vanessa tried to push it back into position.

The movement was unmistakable.

A woman in the front row screamed.

Cameras turned toward Vanessa.

The large screen behind the stage displayed a live close-up.

The entire ballroom saw the unnatural shape sliding beneath the white fabric.

Vanessa attempted to run.

The loosened support strap fell.

The silicone belly dropped from beneath her dress and struck the floor.

It landed beside the table with a soft, heavy sound.

No one moved.

The fake belly lay beneath the white roses like an object from a theater costume room.

The small silver fastening pin remained attached to the decorative wire.

Ethan walked toward it.

He removed the original pin from his pocket and held both pins beneath the camera.

“They match,” he said.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Without the prosthetic, her stomach was flat.

Nathan looked at her as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“There was never a baby,” he whispered.

Vanessa’s face changed.

The frightened performance vanished.

“You ruined everything,” she said.

Nathan’s eyes filled with anger.

“No.”

He pointed toward the silicone belly.

“You did.”

Reporters shouted questions.

Guests raised their phones.

Damian attempted to leave through the control booth.

Hotel security stopped him.

Caroline remained near the rear of the ballroom.

She did not smile.

She did not celebrate.

The public humiliation could not return the months taken from her.

But the truth was finally visible.

Vanessa looked around the room and realized sympathy was gone.

She had only one weapon left.

She pointed at Nathan.

“He knew.”

The crowd became silent again.

Nathan stared at her.

Vanessa raised her voice.

“Nathan knew the pregnancy was fake from the beginning.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

It was another lie.

But this one was more dangerous.

Vanessa reached inside her purse.

She removed a flash drive.

“And I have recordings to prove it.”
