Chapter 4: A Family Rebuilt

Six months later, sunlight poured through the Bennett family garden.

Sophie's cheeks had regained their color.

She laughed as she slowly walked across the lawn beside Daniel.

Carol watched from the porch, carrying two cups of tea.

She had changed more than anyone.

The woman who once judged her daughter-in-law for sleeping late now reminded Sophie to rest after every meal.

She attended every medical appointment.

Learned every medication schedule.

And never again mistook invisible illness for laziness.

One afternoon, Carol quietly apologized.

"I thought strength meant never resting."

She reached for Sophie's hand.

"You taught me that real strength is surviving what nobody else can see."

Sophie smiled through tears.

"I never hated you."

"I just wanted you to know me."

Nearby, Michael played chess with Daniel beneath an old oak tree.

Not as strangers.

As family.

The wedding that almost ended in tragedy became the beginning of something none of them expected.

Not perfection.

Forgiveness.

Carol often looked upstairs at the bedroom where she had once stormed in, ready to accuse her daughter-in-law of being lazy.

She still remembered pulling open those curtains.

She still remembered the blood.

But now, whenever sunlight filled that room, it reminded her of something very different.
