Chapter 1: The Approval

The notification appeared so quietly that it almost seemed insignificant.

HOSTILE ACQUISITION AUTHORIZATION COMPLETE.

A single green checkmark glowed across Evelyn Cross's cracked phone screen.

She stared at it for only a second before locking the device and sliding it beneath the edge of the bed.

Outside the bedroom, another roar of laughter erupted from downstairs.

Crystal glasses clinked.

A jazz band hired for the evening drifted through the penthouse's open layout, blending with the voices of Chicago's wealthiest investors.

To them, tonight was another celebration.

To Evelyn...

It was the beginning of an execution.

She slowly pushed herself upright, one trembling hand supporting the underside of her swollen belly.

The sharp cramp that had seized her moments earlier eased just enough for her to breathe.

"Easy..." she whispered to the twins.

"We're almost there."

The babies answered with two gentle kicks.

For the first time all evening, she smiled.

Not because the pain had disappeared.

Because hope had finally returned.

The bedroom door burst open.

Damian Cross strode inside without knocking.

His tuxedo jacket hung casually over one shoulder, and the expensive watch on his wrist reflected the city lights pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Behind him stood Celeste Monroe, holding another glass of vintage champagne.

"Still lying there?" Celeste asked with theatrical disappointment.

"I honestly expected more determination."

Damian ignored Evelyn's silence.

He walked to the mirror and adjusted his cufflinks.

"The governor's investment adviser just arrived," he said.

"So did three hedge fund managers from New York."

He glanced toward Evelyn.

"I don't care how miserable you feel."

"You'll come downstairs."

"You'll smile."

"And you'll remind everyone what a perfect family man I am."

Evelyn looked at him calmly.

"You don't need me for that."

Damian laughed.

"I need the image."

"Investors don't buy numbers."

"They buy confidence."

Celeste leaned against the doorway.

"And nothing says confidence like a glowing pregnant wife."

The irony almost made Evelyn laugh.

Neither of them knew the truth.

The image Damian desperately protected had already collapsed.

He simply hadn't received the news yet.

Across downtown Chicago, inside the headquarters of Cross Capital, lights flickered on one floor after another.

Although it was nearly eleven at night, dozens of executives hurried back into the building after receiving urgent encrypted notifications.

Emergency Board Session.

Immediate Attendance Required.

Mandatory.

No explanation accompanied the message.

Only one electronic signature.

Evelyn Harper Cross

Most of the younger executives frowned.

They barely recognized the name.

The older directors, however, froze.

One of them quietly removed his glasses.

"It can't be..."

Another director slowly nodded.

"I wondered when she'd finally decide to come back."

Within twenty minutes, the company's outside legal counsel arrived carrying three sealed binders marked:

CONFIDENTIAL – CONTROLLING INTEREST DOCUMENTS

No one spoke.

Back at the penthouse, Damian welcomed another group of guests.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" he announced.

"Tonight we celebrate the most profitable quarter in company history."

Applause filled the room.

Damian raised his champagne glass.

"Here's to Cross Capital's future!"

The crowd echoed the toast.

Only one man near the back remained silent.

Arthur Reynolds.

The firm's oldest outside director.

He glanced down as his phone vibrated.

A secure email.

Sender:

Office of the Executive Chair.

Arthur frowned.

Executive Chair?

Cross Capital didn't have one.

He opened the message.

Attached was a single PDF.

The title made his heartbeat quicken.

Activation of Emergency Governance Authority

Signed.

Executed.

Effective immediately.

His eyes widened as he reached the final page.

Control of every emergency voting share...

Every creditor lien...

Every succession clause...

Every executive appointment...

Had belonged to Evelyn all along.

Arthur slowly lowered his phone.

Across the ballroom, Damian continued smiling confidently, completely unaware that legally...

He was no longer the most powerful person in his own company.

Meanwhile, thirty floors below, inside the vault of First American International Bank, a secure server processed the final stage of Evelyn's authorization.

Cross Capital's master credit facilities.

Transferred.

Emergency collateral rights.

Activated.

Voting trust.

Released.

The banking system generated one final confirmation.

Primary Controlling Creditor Recognized

Evelyn Harper Cross

The automated timestamp read:

10:57:43 P.M.

History had just changed.

No headlines announced it.

No alarms sounded.

No stock ticker flashed.

Only a handful of lawyers, bankers, and directors understood what had happened.

And by the time everyone else did...

There would be nothing Damian could do to stop it.

Evelyn walked onto the upstairs balcony overlooking the glittering skyline.

The city stretched endlessly beneath the stars.

She rested both hands protectively over her stomach.

"For years," she whispered softly,

"I thought surviving was enough."

She looked through the glass wall toward the party below.

Damian laughed loudly while investors crowded around him.

"So arrogant..."

"So certain."

A gentle breeze drifted across the balcony.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Tomorrow..."

"The company wakes up with a different owner."

"And soon..."

"My children will wake up in a world where fear no longer has our last name."

Far below, fireworks from a charity gala exploded over Lake Michigan.

Their colors reflected across the windows of the Cross penthouse.

To the guests inside, they looked like a celebration.

To Evelyn...

May you like

They looked like the opening signal of a war she had already won.
