Chapter 2: The Party of Fools

Chapter 2: The Party of Fools
The party reached its peak just before midnight.
Soft jazz blended with the skyline beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows as Chicago glittered beneath a blanket of summer lights. Crystal chandeliers reflected across polished marble floors while servers carried silver trays of caviar, oysters, and vintage champagne through the penthouse.
Every guest believed they were witnessing Damian Cross's greatest triumph.
No one realized they were attending the funeral of his empire.
Damian stood confidently beside the grand piano, raising another glass.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he announced with his trademark grin, "Cross Capital has never been stronger."
Thunderous applause answered him.
The room was filled with hedge fund managers from New York, venture capitalists from Silicon Valley, real estate developers from Miami, and several prominent Chicago bankers. Every conversation revolved around Damian's upcoming billion-dollar expansion.
Only one person remained strangely quiet.
Arthur Reynolds.
The seventy-year-old chairman of the independent board stood near the balcony, his phone still hidden inside his jacket pocket.
Three minutes earlier, he had received another encrypted notification.
Emergency Governance Meeting Begins in 45 Minutes. Attendance Required.
Arthur looked toward Damian.
He still doesn't know.
The realization made him uneasy.
Upstairs...
Evelyn slowly changed into a long navy maternity gown.
Her reflection in the mirror hardly resembled the confident corporate attorney she had once been.
Months of stress had hollowed her cheeks.
Dark circles framed exhausted eyes.
But beneath the fatigue...
Something had returned.
Resolve.
She carefully brushed her hair before fastening a simple diamond pendant around her neck.
A gift from her late mother.
Inside the pendant rested something Damian had never discovered.
Not diamonds.
Not money.
A miniature encrypted storage chip.
For four years...
It had quietly collected copies of contracts, emails, banking authorizations, executive signatures, and every document necessary to expose the truth behind Cross Capital.
She touched the pendant gently.
"Almost time."
Downstairs, Celeste Monroe noticed Evelyn descending the staircase.
She smirked.
"Well..."
"The ghost finally decided to join us."
Several guests turned.
Their polite smiles quickly shifted into awkward silence.
Evelyn walked carefully, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
She ignored every curious stare.
Damian met her halfway.
"There you are."
Without asking how she felt...
Without noticing the exhaustion in her face...
He simply adjusted the sleeve of her gown.
"You look tired."
He forced a smile.
"Try looking happier."
One investor laughed politely.
Damian wrapped an arm around Evelyn's shoulders.
"Everyone," he announced proudly, "my beautiful wife."
Flashbulbs erupted.
Several photographers captured the perfect family portrait.
Only Evelyn knew how false the image truly was.
She smiled.
A calm...
Almost mysterious smile.
One that Arthur Reynolds noticed immediately.
She's not afraid.
His heartbeat quickened.
She's waiting.
A young banker approached Damian.
"Congratulations, Mr. Cross."
"The financing from First American International must have been finalized today."
Damian grinned.
"It was."
"We now have complete control."
Evelyn quietly lowered her eyes.
No...
I do.
Across the ballroom, another executive checked his phone.
Then another.
Within seconds...
Half a dozen screens lit up simultaneously.
New Email.
Priority: Executive Governance
Most ignored it.
Arthur did not.
Neither did Margaret Sinclair, Cross Capital's chief legal officer.
She discreetորեն stepped toward Arthur.
"You received it too?"
Arthur nodded.
"What does this mean?"
Margaret whispered.
"It means the succession protocol has been activated."
Arthur frowned.
"Succession?"
"There hasn't been a death."
Margaret's expression remained unreadable.
"There doesn't need to be."
Damian climbed onto the small presentation stage.
Behind him, enormous LED screens displayed Cross Capital's logo.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
He clicked a remote.
Projected profits appeared.
"Our company has tripled in value over the last five years."
Applause filled the room.
Damian continued.
"And thanks to our newest financing package..."
"We'll soon acquire three more international firms."
A loud vibration interrupted him.
His phone.
He frowned.
Unknown Number.
He declined the call.
Seconds later...
It rang again.
He rejected it.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Celeste leaned closer.
"Persistent."
Damian laughed.
"Probably another journalist."
He silenced the phone.
Across the room...
Arthur's own device vibrated.
This time it displayed a familiar number.
Cross Capital Headquarters.
He answered immediately.
"Arthur speaking."
The voice on the other end sounded unusually tense.
"Sir..."
"The emergency board session has reached quorum."
Arthur looked toward Damian.
"But the CEO is still at the party."
A brief silence followed.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"Sir..."
"The CEO wasn't invited."
Arthur froze.
"What?"
"The Executive Chair ordered that Mr. Damian Cross not be notified until after the first resolution."
Arthur slowly lowered the phone.
His eyes found Evelyn.
She stood quietly beside the champagne tower, gently rubbing her stomach while listening to a violinist perform in the corner.
She never looked toward Arthur.
She didn't need to.
Everything had already been set in motion.
Meanwhile...
Thirty floors below...
Inside Cross Capital headquarters...
The boardroom doors closed.
Twenty-three directors took their seats around the massive walnut conference table.
Every chair except one.
Damian Cross's.
At exactly 11:30 p.m., Chief Legal Officer Margaret Sinclair placed a sealed folder in the center of the table.
Stamped across its cover were seven words.
AUTHORIZATION OF CONTROLLING EMERGENCY GOVERNANCE RIGHTS
The room fell silent.
Margaret broke the seal.
"I call this emergency meeting to order."
She paused before looking around the room.
"By legal authority granted under Section Twelve of the company's founding charter..."
She opened the final page.
"...the Executive Chair now assumes immediate operational control of Cross Capital."
One director swallowed nervously.
Another adjusted his glasses.
Finally...
Someone asked the question everyone was thinking.
"Who is the Executive Chair?"
Margaret slowly turned the signature page toward the room.
Every eye widened.
Printed in elegant black ink were two names.
Evelyn Harper Cross
Founder. Controlling Creditor. Executive Chair.
Silence swallowed the room.

Back inside the penthouse, Damian lifted another champagne glass and smiled at his guests, completely unaware that, at that very moment, every legal authority he believed belonged to him had just been transferred to the woman standing only a few feet away.
