Chapter 1: The Woman Who Called Him “Sir”

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Called Him “Sir”

The silence inside the Grand Alcazar lobby lasted only a few seconds.

To Julian Rossi, it felt like an eternity.

Elena stood behind the housekeeping cart with both hands wrapped around its brass handle. She kept her shoulders straight, but he could see the faint trembling in her fingers.

Camila stared from Julian to Elena and then down at Elena’s swollen stomach.

“You said she disappeared eight months ago,” Camila said sharply.

“She did.”

Julian’s gaze never left Elena.

The concierge, Malcolm Pierce, approached with two security guards behind him.

“Mr. Rossi, perhaps we should continue this conversation somewhere private.”

“No.”

Julian’s voice was low, but it carried across the marble lobby.

“I asked my wife a question.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“And I told you I am working.”

Malcolm turned toward her with visible irritation.

“Elena, leave your cart and report to the service office.”

Julian stepped between them.

“She isn’t going anywhere with you.”

“Julian,” Camila hissed. “This is humiliating.”

He finally looked at her.

“My pregnant wife has been missing for eight months, and I’ve just found her cleaning hotel floors. Your embarrassment is not my concern.”

Camila’s face went pale.

Elena pushed the cart forward.

“Please move.”

Julian did not.

“Is the baby mine?”

A murmur swept through the guests.

Pain flashed across Elena’s face before she forced it away.

“That question is eight months too late.”

She tried to steer around him.

Julian caught the side of the cart, stopping it.

“Elena, I searched for you. I hired investigators in six countries. I called every hospital, every friend, every relative you ever mentioned.”

“And yet you never found me.”

“Because you changed your name.”

“Because I had to.”

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Julian’s expression changed.

For the first time, his confusion gave way to alarm.

“Had to?”

Elena looked toward the security guards. Then toward the cameras mounted above the concierge desk.

Something in her eyes made Julian’s blood turn cold.

She was not merely angry.

She was afraid.

“Elena,” he said quietly. “Who are you hiding from?”

Her lips parted.

Before she could answer, the elevator doors opened across the lobby.

A tall man in a navy suit stepped out, speaking into his phone.

Julian recognized him instantly.

Adrian Vale.

His oldest friend.

His chief financial officer.

The man Julian trusted with every company, every account, and nearly every secret he possessed.

Adrian saw Elena.

For one fraction of a second, his pleasant expression disappeared.

Elena’s breathing stopped.

Then her knees buckled.

Julian lunged forward and caught her before she struck the onyx floor.

“Elena!”

The lobby erupted.

Her head fell against his chest as he lowered her carefully.

Julian pressed one hand against her cheek.

“Elena, open your eyes.”

She did not respond.

Adrian hurried toward them.

“What happened?”

Julian looked up.

He had known Adrian for twenty-five years.

But at that moment, one detail struck him harder than Elena’s collapse.

Adrian was not looking at Elena with shock.

May you like

He was looking at her with recognition.

And fear.
