Chapter 14: What Remained

Chapter 14: What Remained

The investigations lasted six months.

Adrian Vale was charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, financial fraud, bribery, and conspiracy connected to Lorenzo Rossi’s death.

Stephen Crowe, Malcolm Pierce, and five Rossi executives were arrested.

Bianca accepted a plea agreement for her role in freezing Elena’s accounts and facilitating her forced removal from the mansion.

Camila testified against Adrian.

In exchange for her cooperation, she received a reduced sentence, though she still went to prison.

Julian dissolved the merger and resigned temporarily as chief executive.

He sold two private jets and a Mediterranean villa to establish a compensation fund for the families affected by the Genoa collapse.

He also transferred half of his voting shares into a protected trust for Isabella, controlled jointly by Elena and an independent board.

The press called it an act of repentance.

Julian considered it a beginning.

Elena did not return to the lakeside mansion.

Instead, she moved into a quiet house near the coast with Isabella.

Julian visited every day he was permitted.

Some days, Elena invited him inside.

Other days, she met him at the door and handed him the baby without conversation.

He never complained.

He changed diapers, warmed bottles, and walked Isabella through the garden when she refused to sleep.

One evening, Elena found him asleep in a chair with their daughter resting against his chest.

A business report lay unopened on the table.

Elena gently lifted Isabella.

Julian woke immediately.

“Is she all right?”

“She’s fine.”

He stood.

“I should go.”

“Julian.”

He stopped.

Elena looked toward the dining table.

“I made too much food.”

He understood the invitation for what it was.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But a door opening.

They ate pasta while Isabella slept nearby.

For the first time, they spoke about ordinary things.

The weather.

The garden.

A broken cabinet hinge.

After dinner, Julian washed the dishes.

“You never washed dishes before,” Elena said.

“I owned people who washed dishes.”

“That sounds terrible.”

“It was.”

She smiled.

Then the smile faded.

“Do you still think about the eight months?”

“Every day.”

“So do I.”

Julian dried his hands.

“I can’t change what happened.”

“No.”

“But I can change what happens next.”

Elena studied him for a long moment.

“I don’t need you to rescue me.”

“I know.”

“I need you to listen when I tell you something is wrong.”

“I will.”

“I need you to trust me even when the truth is inconvenient.”

“I will.”

“And I need you to understand that rebuilding this marriage may take years.”

Julian stepped closer but did not touch her.

“I have years.”

Elena looked down at her wedding ring, which she had begun wearing again on a chain.

Then she removed the chain.

Julian held his breath.

She did not place the ring on her finger.

Instead, she set it on the table between them.

“Not yet,” she said.

Julian nodded.

May you like

“Not yet.”

But she did not ask him to leave.
